Stellar Singles Serves Up Third Straight Win

SAN FRANCISCO -- On a bright sunny Thursday morning at the Bay Club SF Tennis, No. 11 Academy of Art triumphed over No. 22 St. Edwards 5-2 to sweep their home stand and push their winning streak to three. After the hard fought victory the Urban Knights improve to 7-2 and remain perfect at home with a 3-0 record.

For the first time this season the No. 1 senior pair of Klara Thell-Lenntorp and Alma Thell-Lenntorp were defeated in doubles. A strong start by SEU had the twins facing a 5-1 deficit but in an incredible display of tenacity and perseverance the Swedish duo came back to win four straight points and tie the match 5-5. The twins continued to battle but the Hilltoppers went on to win the next two points and take the match 7-5. Junior Mariacristina Andrisani and freshman Sofia Ragona clashed in another close doubles matchup that was pushed into tiebreaker after tying 6-6. The Italian pair went out to an early lead, but the Hilltoppers tied the extra set 4-4 then took the next two points to win the match.

Down 2-0 on the doubles and default singles loss in the six position due to ART U playing with only five players the Urban Knights had some ground to make up. And they did just that. ART U started singles strong with a 6-2, 6-1 routing by senior Taisiia Andrieieva for the Knights' first point of the day. Ragona followed up with a 6-2, 6-3 victory before Klara maintained her perfect singles record and collected her seventh straight with a 6-0, 7-6 win over Kate Malazonia. Academy of Art clinched their third straight win when Andrisani took down Valentina Martinez 6-3, 6-1. Alma ended the day on a high note battling out a 7-5, 6-4 win playing out the second position to give the Urban Knights a 5-2 victory on a day in which they did not lose one singles set.

After a successful three game home stand, ART U will travel to Florida for an intensive road trip consisting of three matches in three days from March 24-26 against No. 7 Lynn, No. 12 Florida Southern, and No. 3 Saint Leo.
