LOS ANGELES -- Playing on back to back days, No. 5 Academy of Art finished their southern California road trip with a 6-1 win over Cal State LA, sweeping doubles and only dropping one singles match.
"Tough match today against Cal State LA," said head coach
Clarisse Baca. "However, the team figured it out and came up with a strong finish. It's never easy to win, while you are not playing your best. I am glad everybody stayed mentally strong."
In typical ART U fashion, the Urban Knights dominated doubles, starting at the first position with senior twins
Alma Thell-Lenntorp and
Klara Thell-Lenntorp taking down Isabella Lopez  and Luciana Di Laura 6-2. Seniors
Monika Stanikova and
Paula Alcantara battled out a 7-6, 7-3 win before junior
Maria Andrisani and freshman
Sofia Ragona completed the doubles sweep with a 7-5 victory. Â
The No. 7 singles player in the nation Stanikova remained undefeated in the spring with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Amanda Schneider. Klara, playing out the second position, overwhelmed Luciana Di Laura 6-2, 6-3. Her twin Alma had a see-saw matchup, winning the first set 6-2, but then dropping the next set 6-0. Alma overcame the scoreless set and won the match with a 6-1 final set.
Ragona fought valiantly in the four spot, but dropped back to back 5-7 sets to Isabella Lopez. Alcantara won her first set 6-2, then lost a set 3-6 before sweeping the third set. Adrisani played almost an identical match to Alcantara, going 6-2, 0-6, and 6-2 to take the match.
With the win ART U improves to a perfect 3-0. After an intensive but successful road trip, Academy of Art women's tennis will be back in action on March 2 against Stanislaus State at the Bay Club in San Francisco.
