Academy of Art Posts Seventh NorCal Pod Win In Home Finale

SAN FRANCISCO – In a bit of déjà vu from the night prior, the Urban Knights responded to Holy Names taking the opening set by hitting .400 or higher in the second and third before finishing off a 3-1 (19-25, 25-19, 25-12, 25-21) Pacific West Conference victory in their last home match of the season. Inside Kezar Pavilion for the final time in 2019 on Thursday night, Academy of Art finished with its second highest hitting percentage of the year (.261) led by16 kills from junior middle blocker Carly Evetts.

After HNU scored the first four points, ART U fought back though the Hawks would not relinquish their lead the rest of the way. Sophomore middle blocker Jillian Wheaton one of her season-high three service aces while the Knights cut the margin to 23-19, but Holy Names finished the opening set 25-19 winners in the end.

Each time either side would gain an advantage in the first portion of the second set, the other would come back to tie all the way to 15-15. From there, things shifted with a 7-2 Academy of Art run highlighted by a kill from sophomore outside hitter Celena Davison plus her first block solo of the year. ART U continued to apply pressure with kills by Evetts down the stretch before freshman middle blocker/opposite Sierra Coenen's first collegiate kill completed the 25-19 result to even the match 1-1.

20460The Knights quickly gained control of set three with a 7-0 surge that included two more Evetts kills. Later when junior outside hitter Mariana Figueroa Ferriera sent down three straight kills and junior middle blocker/opposite Sadie Emery added the next three, Academy of Art soon found itself up 19-7. Four of the frame's final six points went the way of ART U, wrapping on a Wheaton kill for the 25-12 win.

When the Knights used a 10-3 push to go from down 11-9 to up 19-14, the fourth set appeared to be the last the teams would play on Wednesday night. A 6-2 Holy Names response perhaps raised some doubt, but with the Knights still in front 21-20, Wheaton logged a kill then clutch back-to-back service aces to force set point which Evetts finished off at 25-21.

Now one win away from tying the program's most wins in the NCAA Championship eligible era, the Urban Knights improve to 12-15 on the year and 9-10 in PacWest action. Evetts' 16 kills marked the seventh time she had reached double figures in her past nine matches and her .455 hitting percentage was the fifth time she'd gone .400 or higher in her last six outings. Wheaton added 12 kills and Emery posted 10 kills. Sophomore setter Picabo Reinhold delivered 48 assists to give her an even 1,600 in her career while junior libero Ashley Pawlak led the way with 23 digs, Figueroa Ferriera contributed 22 digs, and Davison bettered her career-high from the night prior with 11 digs.

Holy Names drops to 3-21 overall and 2-16 in conference despite a match-high 19 kills from Sierra Allen. The Hawks joined Notre Dame de Namur and Fresno Pacific as three of four opponents in the PacWest's Northern California pod to be swept by Academy of Art this season.

Three matches remain for ART U in 2019 and all will come on Academy of Art's Hawaii roadtrip next week. Hawaii Pacific (Nov. 20), Chaminade (Nov. 21), and UH Hilo (Nov. 23) are the three upcoming stops.
