Urban Knights Best Hawks 3-1, Continue To Stack Wins

OAKLAND, Calif. – Proving to be one of the winningest teams in the Pacific West Conference over the past three weeks, Academy of Art volleyball got ahead of Holy Names initially before finishing off a 3-1 victory (25-16, 25-20, 22-25, 25-19) over the Hawks inside Tobin Gymnasium on Wednesday night. Junior middle blocker Carly Evetts remained on fire, posting a team-high 14 kills while now hitting .370 or higher in each of her last four matches.

Some early separation came for ART U as HNU miscues plus Evetts' first kill led to a 5-0 run and, though the Hawks came back within one point, the Urban Knights never relinquished their advantage. A 6-0 push soon after was capped by a service ace from sophomore setter Picabo Reinhold, giving Academy of Art a 17-9 lead. Exchanging points the rest of the way, ART U finished off the frame on top 25-16.

Set two was an even battle that saw the teams each go on four-point runs, but the Knights turned theirs into a 10-2 surge that saw them go from down three to up five with set point to follow. Junior outside hitter Ashley Pawlak had three kills during that stretch then finished off the 25-20 victory with her eighth of the night.

Like the opening set, an early 5-0 run by Holy Names proved to be key as Academy of Art came within a single point of their opponents multiple times, but could not overcome the deficit. HNU notched the final two points it needed to earn take the third frame 25-22.

Up 10-8 in the fourth, ART U unleashed its biggest momentum shift of the night, rattling off seven straight points including three service aces from Pawlak. Following a 6-1 run thereafter, the Knights were on the verge of earning the win, but the Hawks stayed alive for five points before Evetts' kill ended the contest on a 25-19 set result.

Leading the way for an Academy of Art team that is now 10-12 overall and 7-7 in PacWest matchups, Evetts turned in her fourth straight double-digit kill performance with 14 kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Pawlak, whose four service aces put her into a tie with Lyndsay Mlynar for fourth on the ART U career list (80), collected her 10th double-double by way of 11 kills and 16 digs. Junior middle blocker/opposite Sadie Emery had nine kills plus eight digs while junior outside hitter Mariana Figueroa Ferriera added seven kills and 13 digs. Reinhold's 15th double-double of the season saw her amass 34 assists and 17 digs.

"[Cobe] was able to find which hitter was hot and we were able to pass well enough to set that hitter," said head coach Allen McCreary. "Our servers were the key as we did a great job at keeping them out of system which gave us a lot of free-ball returns."

Despite a match-high 17 kills with 17 digs from Lauren Sera, Holy Names drops to 3-18 on the year and 2-13 in conference.

For their penultimate home match, the Urban Knights will host Dominican next Wednesday, Nov. 6 for a 7 p.m. first serve inside Kezar Pavilion.
