SAN FRANCISCO – Building on 10 years of history, Academy of Art University Volleyball brings together a strong core of returners plus several new faces in 2018. First-year head coach
Allen McCreary takes over the program in what will be the start of a new chapter for the Urban Knights.
The 10th season of Academy of Art University volleyball was one of dedication to one another. United through challenges that came their way, the 2017 Urban Knights achieved victories in multiple five-set non-conference battles, accomplished an impressive comeback win in San Diego, and bid farewell to a pair of accomplished four-year seniors. Beginning this Friday at Stanislaus State, the Knights' 2018 schedule will feature 30 matches with two tournaments including ART U's own West Region Volleyball Crossover, 15 home contests, a brief stop in Hawaii, and the opportunity to go head-to-head with many strong opponents in the Pacific West Conference despite the departure of 2017 champion California Baptist and Dixie State. The team carries a trio of four-year seniors in libero
Lyndsay Mlynar, setter
Alana Lucas, and middle blocker
Safua Elisaia who each appear among the program's top 10 in respective career categories (Mlynar seventh in digs, Lucas fourth in assists, Elisaia third in total blocks).
They join three more juniors with returning middle blocker
Jennifer Argelander combining with two new faces, outside hitter
Kaytlin Yost and
Kiersten Kerch. Yost was a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the net at Yavapai College while Kerch's dynamic offensive talents were on display at Grossmont College the last two years.
Growing into their respective sophomore seasons will be outside hitter
Ashley Pawlak, defensive specialist
Michaela Charrette, and middle blocker
Sadie Emery while five freshmen round out the roster. Outside hitter
Talia Thompson is among that crew after an injury kept her out of ART U's 2017 campaign and she mixes with setters
Picabo Reinhold and
Amanda Burger as well as middle hitter
Jillian Wheaton and outside hitter
Celena Davison.
Under new direction and loaded with a collection of talented student-athletes, Academy of Art University volleyball progresses into its 11th season this week.
