Mata Forces Tie with First Career Goal

IRVINE, Calif. -- Two overtime periods were not enough to settle the issue in the Urban Knight's final road game of 2018 that saw senior defender Chayney Mata's first career goal in the 53rd minute to force a 1-1 tie with Concordia.

The Eagles struck first in the 22nd minute when Carmany Jones slotted a ball between senior goalkeeper Morgan Wirz and the left post.

After a foul in the box the Urban Knights were awarded a penalty kick in the 53rd minute. Mata lined up the shot and landed the ball in the back right corner of the net to tie the contest at one.

"Chayney has stepped up in so many ways for this team throughout her career," said head coach Chris King. "Today was just another example of her coming up big for us."

Both teams had opportunities the remainder of the half but none resulting in a score by the end of regulation. Academy of Art more than doubled their shot total in the second half with eight.

After two periods of overtime neither team could find the net and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. The Eagles were held scoreless in large part by the effort of sophomore goalkeeper Lara Pflicke, who collected a career high 12 saves to help secure the Knight's first tie.

After the tie ART U is 7-7-1 overall and 1-6-1 in PacWest play. The Urban Knights return to the bay for the home stretch of games and their last chance to claim the all-time wins record starting with Hawaii Pacific Oct. 27.
