SAN FRANCISCO – Academy of Art women's soccer and SF State squared off for just the third time in program history on Wednesday. However, the Gators continued their successful start to the season, scoring a pair of early goals and eventually shutting out the Urban Knights by a score of 2-0.
Â
SFSU got off to a quick start in the opening period, scoring a pair of goals in the early-goings to take a 2-0 lead. The first goal was nearly saved by senior goalkeeper
Maggie Alikpala-Wilson: the Gators' Ana Williams took the initial shot, which Alikpala-Wilson saved by diving to her right. However, the ball ricocheted off of her gloves to the feet of Bianca Lowe who was able to find the back of the net. SF State's second goal came just four minutes later which was scored after the ball rebounded once again. This time, Ally King scored the goal, giving the Gators a two-goal advantage. The Urban Knights' best opportunity of the half came in the 42nd-minute when freshman midfielder
Sydney Cooke managed to get a shot on-target, but SF State's Christina Holguin was there to make the save.

Â
Cooke was active again to start the second half, getting off two quick shots on-goal before the Gators were able to put together an attack of their own. For the remainder of the match, ART U did well in holding off SF State, denying a total of 14 second-half shots, including three on-goal.
Â
Altogether, Cooke led the team with three shots on-goal while junior midfielder
Alice Michell tied with Cooke for the most shots overall (three). The entirety of the roster worked tirelessly throughout the match as there were only two substitutes made during the contest (once in each half).
Â
Academy of Art now sits at 0-3-1 at the end of their non-conference portion of the schedule and will now receive eight days off from competition before beginning PacWest-play. Their first match will take place on September 21 at Notre Dame de Namur.Â
