Knights Sweep Hawks Behind Complete Team Effort

SAN FRANCISCO – Hitting their second-highest percentage of the season, Academy of Art Volleyball took care of business, sweeping Holy Names 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-19) inside Kezar Pavilion on Wednesday evening. Three Urban Knights totaled double-digit kills in the victory.

In the early going, a kill by senior middle blocker Margaret Winkler sparked a 12-2 run and ART U went from trailing by one to leading by nine. Senior outside hitter Bailey Soolsma added a pair of kills during the surge and her efforts helped earn Academy of Art set point which sophomore middle blocker Jennifer Argelander put away for the 25-15 win.

Freshman outside hitter Ashley Pawlak highlighted six unanswered points from ART U in the first portion of the second set, but Holy Names came back to tie, gain a lead, and start a back-and-forth series that eventually had the Hawks up 23-21. Junior setter Alana Lucas came up with a crucial service ace as Academy of Art proceeded to score four straight points for the 25-23 triumph on a kill by redshirt junior middle blocker Safua Elisaia.

The Knights' best start to a set this season came in the third frame. Academy of Art started up 7-0 and was soon ahead 11-1 following a Soolsma service ace and a Pawlak kill. HNU fought back to come within four points at 13-9, but Elisaia and Argelander worked in tandem during a 6-2 push late, setting up the eventual 25-19 victory to complete the sweep.

ART U improves to 6-20 on the year and 3-16 in PacWest play. Leading a collection of three Urban Knights with double-digit kills was 13 from Soolsma. She was complemented by Pawlak's 10 kills plus 15 digs for her fifth double-double and Elisaia's 10 to tie her season-high. Aiding the even distribution, Lucas collected a season-high 40 assists while redshirt junior libero Lyndsay Mlynar put up 20 digs for her fifth time with 20+ this year.

The loss drops Holy Names to 0-28 overall and 0-19 in conference. Summer Williams paced the Hawks with 13 kills.

Academy of Art will host Point Loma this Friday, Nov. 17 back inside Kezar Pavilion for Senior Day. Both Soolsma and Winkler will be honored prior to the 2 p.m. first serve.
