Volleyball Executes Sunday Sweep of Hawks

OAKLAND, Calif. – After outlasting Holy Names in the opening set, Academy of Art Volleyball used runs of 9-1 and 6-0 in the sets that followed to complete its first sweep of the year, triumphing over Holy Names 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-16) on Sunday inside Tobin Gymnasium. Three Urban Knights posted eight or more kills to lead ART U.

Despite a 7-3 start and another 7-0 run shortly thereafter by the Hawks on their home floor, the Urban Knights put together two quick 3-0 swings then closed out the set on a 7-1 surge. Redshirt junior defensive specialist Lyndsay Mlynar delivered two service aces and freshman middle blocker Sadie Emery provided the final two kills for the 26-24 victory.

"Coming back in that first set definitely helped our confidence for sure," said head coach Ray Batalon. "We started off slow and our hitters struggled to find any sort of rhythm. It helped towards the later part of that set that we started to limit our unforced errors and got into a groove offensively."

After the teams traded points to begin the second set, Holy Names established a 14-10 advantage, but the momentum swung yet again on the aforementioned 9-1 push that gave Academy of Art a four-point lead. Sophomore middle blocker Jennifer Argelander and freshman outside hitter Kimiah Johnson each had a pair of kills during the run. Offensive errors furthered ART U's margin before redshirt junior middle blocker Safua Elisaia and Emery finished off the 25-21 win.

"Both Sadie and Jen did a great job being efficient with their attacking this afternoon," said Batalon. "Even though they didn't reach double-digit kills, they managed their games well and helped us put a string of runs together especially in set two, then, in set three, they helped build some big leads for us."

After gaining a small advantage in the third set, the Knights expanded their lead with a 6-0 burst that featured three kills from senior outside hitter Bailey Soolsma. Holy Names responded by lowering the margin to six at 18-12, but would come no closer as Academy of Art scored on six of the final nine points to finish the sweep with a 25-16 end result.

The Urban Knights improve to 5-15 this season and 2-11 in conference play. Soolsma's 10 kills led Academy of Art, followed by nine from Johnson and eight from Emery (.389). Sophomore setter Lilika Teu and junior setter Alana Lucas once again shared the assist-load, putting up 16 and 14 respectively. Freshman libero Ashley Pawlak had her 11th double-digit dig effort with 18 on Sunday.

Holy Names remains in search of its first win of the year at 0-20 overall and 0-11 in the PacWest. Summer Williams and Sierra Allen shared the team-lead with seven kills apiece.

ART U remains on the road for its next two contests, rematches at Dominican (Oct. 28) and at Fresno Pacific (Nov. 3).

"I thought we did a lot better job with our passing today," said Batalon. "We have a few days of practice and we'll continue to make that a big priority for us as we prepare for Dominican and Fresno Pacific."
