SAN FRANCISCO – It was only a matter of time until Academy of Art's offense broke out, and it just so happened that Monday afternoon's match against Chaminade was the day. The Urban Knights (1-6-1, 1-1 PacWest) came from behind twice to upend the Silverswords (1-5, 1-2 PacWest) in the 89th minute by a score of 3-2.
In the first half, it was Chaminade who struck first, scoring an early goal in the 14th minute off of a well-placed corner kick. However, it did not take long for ART U to respond. In a scrum in the goalie box, both redshirt senior midfielder
Natalie Gabriel and redshirt junior mid
Kendall Bozart were able to put together an assist to senior midfielder
Laura Mick who tapped it in for her first goal of the season.
The second period began with a score of 1-1, but the tie only lasted for 38 seconds. CUH's Lauren Uehara managed to win the ball from an ART U defender approximately 10 yards out and got off a quick shot before the other defenders could swarm the box. The goal gave the Silverswords their second lead of the game. For over 20 minutes, the Urban Knights fought to erase the deficit, finally coming through in the 69th. Sophomore midfielder
Alice Michell found the feet of senior defender Mikayla Godden outside of the box. The Clovis, Calif. native took an open shot that sailed with precision out of the reach of Chaminade's leaping goalie to even the score at 2-2.
In the following 15 minutes, Academy of Art took five shots, looking to take home their first PacWest victory of 2016. However, both sides found themselves with the clock winding down into the final seconds of regulation and overtime was all, but certain. That all changed in the 89th minute as the Silverswords committed a foul inside of their own goalie box to set up a penalty kick for junior midfielder
Abi Chavez. Looking to end the game, the LA native shot the ball into the right corner of the net, beyond the stretched arms of Chaminade's keeper. It was a special goal for the LA Pierce College transfer, as it was her first in an Urban Knight uniform. The Knights dug deep to hold on to their lead and withstood a final shot from the Silverswords that sailed over the crossbar along with their hopes to tie the contest.
In the match, Academy of Art compiled 16 shots of which six were on goal. Chavez collected the majority of those with seven shots on the day, the most of any Urban Knight this season. Despite allowing two goals, junior goalkeeper
Maggie Alikpala-Wilson had a solid game in front of the net, amassing five saves to bring her season total to 26. ART U's three goals were their most since also netting three against Concordia on
November 1, 2015.
The Urban Knights will now head out on a three-game road trip where they will take on the likes of Holy Names, Point Loma, and Azusa Pacific.
