HAYWARD, Calif. – The Urban Knights' finale to the Division II West Region Volleyball Showcase featured another breakout performance from junior middle blocker
Margaret Winkler, but it was tournament host Cal State East Bay who exacted revenge with a 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-21) sweep.
In a closely contested first set, ART U used multiple kills by Winkler to execute a 5-0 run and go up 18-13. However, the Pioneers pushed back 12-2 to finish the set on top 25-20. After falling behind 18-11 in the second set, Academy of Art rallied 7-2 with a pair of kills from freshman middle blocker
Jennifer Argelander and soon tied things at 23-23. The Knights then fought off one set point, but could not defend against a second, falling 26-24.
The third frame was a see-saw as well with no more than three points separating the teams until a 5-0 burst from the Pioneers. The home team's 20-14 advantage did not last as back-to-back kills from senior outside hitter
Kabrina Speakman began a 5-2 response to stay close. Down the stretch, however, CSUEB fended off a potential comeback to win the set 25-21 and take the match.
ART U moves to 1-7 on the year with the loss. Winkler turned in her second consecutive 10-kill effort to once again tie her career-high. She had no errors on 20 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage to go with five block assists. Redshirt sophomore libero
Lyndsay Mlynar and Speakman added 19 digs and 14 digs respectively.
Now 4-4 on the year, Cal State East Bay was led by 15 kills from Deja Thompson and got 17 digs for Katie Ireland.
Academy of Art now looks to the beginning of Pacific West Conference play with a Sept. 17 afternoon matchup at Dominican.
