SAN FRANCISCO – After a rainy Halloween, the sun came out on Tuesday morning to shine on a celebration of Academy of Art men's soccer's (2-13-1, 2-9 PacWest) four seniors. Although putting together an energy-filled 90 minutes, the Urban Knights were unable to hold back two late goals from Hawaii Pacific (5-6-4, 5-4-2 PacWest), falling 2-0.
Â
Before the kickoff, the friends and families of forward
Jake Walter, midfielder
Justin Erhunmwunsee, forward
Mathayo Huma, and defender
Ricardo "Ricky" Mendoza came out in support of their final home match. After a ceremony in which the seniors were each gifted a framed collage of their action photos from over the years, the whistle blew to begin the contest.
Â
In the first half, HPU got off to a quick offensive start. The Sharks managed to get off 11 shots with two players recording three apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper
Kevin Mendez was there every time however, thwarting each of their five attempts on goal. For the Knights, midfielder
Jón Jóhannesson was their biggest contributor in the attack, collecting two out of ART U's five shots in the period.
Â
The second set of 45 minutes commenced with the score still knotted at 0-0. The tie would hold until the 72nd-minute when HPU's Sven Koenig gave the Sharks a 1-0 advantage. Koenig would strike once again less than six minutes later, giving him a PacWest leading 19 goals for the year. With the deficit now at two, Academy of Art looked to answer in the remaining 12 minutes. However, they were only able to put together one drive which resulted in a blocked shot taken by Walter. Walter's shot was the final of three he took in the half, the most out of any ART U player. Despite allowing the two goals, Mendez compiled seven saves while facing a total of 19 shots.
Â
The Urban Knights will now head out on their final road trip of the season where they will take on PacWest foes California Baptist and Concordia.Â
