LAIE, Hawaii – The streak stayed alive Tuesday night inside Cannon Activities Center as Academy of Art University women's basketball prevailed 92-81 over BYU-Hawaii. ART U rose to 10-0 in Pacific West Conference play after the Urban Knights started the second quarter with a 14-5 run and never relented, making two clutch baskets and free throws in the game's final minutes to ward off a Seasider comeback and ensure the victory.
"I was less than thrilled with our defense tonight, but we made the plays we needed to in order to pull out a win," said head coach
LaNay Larson, who is now 15-1 with Academy of Art in Hawaii over the past five seasons. "It's always hard to play that third game over here so we were glad to come away with the win and stay undefeated."
It was a game of runs early as BYU-Hawaii opened by getting ahead 8-2 on a pair of 3-pointers, but a 7-0 ART U response quickly shortened the gap. The contest continued to be a shootout with the teams trading a pair of shots from distance while they jockeyed for an advantage. Fittingly the first quarter ended with Celeste Claw's triple that tied the game 23-23.
Senior guard
Sha'Nice Storey came alive with two makes from long range during a 14-5 Academy of Art surge to start the second quarter. Junior forward
Priscilla Mora's putback on an offensive rebound gave the Knights their largest advantage at 37-30, but the Seasiders rallied with a 9-3 run to nearly come all the way back. Four points from junior forward
D'Andree Galipeau in the final minute including a buzzer-beater helped give ART U a 44-41 lead at halftime.
Senior guard
Regina Camera's triple started an Academy of Art 10-4 push to open the third quarter, but the Seasiders fought back to make it just one-point margin shortly thereafter. Helping keep the pressure on late in the third was senior guard
Zoie Sheng who then knocked down a 3-pointer during an 8-2 surge early in the fourth.
A pair of shots from distance came off senior guard
Jasmin Guinn's hand to give ART U an 11-point advantage with four minutes and 38 seconds left. As the game hung in the balance, BYUH executed a 9-1 run that featured six straight points from Claw. Up just 82-79 in the final two minutes, the Knights benefited from baskets by Galipeau and Storey to stay in control. Then a 6-for-6 finale from the free throw line by Guinn and Sheng sealed the 92-81 victory.
Now a perfect 10-0 in PacWest play and 15-5 overall, Academy of Art was once again led by its senior class. Storey erupted for 24 points (6-for-11 from long range) and eight rebounds while Sheng added 19 points (8-for-10 at the foul line) and six assists. Guinn collected her third straight double-double and eighth of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Camera just barely missed the first triple-double in program history with 11 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Galipeau and sophomore guard
Desiree Harris each had eight points off the bench.
BYU-Hawaii falls to 6-8 overall and 3-6 in conference play despite a game-high 30 points and six assists from Claw. Mata Tonga contributed a 13-point, 14-rebound double-double as well.
