KNIGHT WATCHNearly 20 games into the season, the Knights remain sixth in the country in turnover margin (8.05) and lead the PacWest by a healthy 4.0 in that category. Academy of Art also ranks second in the NCAA in free throws made, sixth in total steals (209), and 15th in both total rebounds (745) and scoring offense (79.2 points per game). With 10 at UH Hilo on
Jan. 14, senior guard
Jasmin Guinn contributed to the team's season-high 51 rebounds in that game while also adding 29 points in 28 minutes. She is also the NCAA Division II leader in total steals (70) and already tied for third all-time in ART U single-season history. Guinn ranks third in the country in steals per game (3.68) and 16th in points per game after reclaiming her place atop the PacWest in points per game (20.3). Double-doubles and a 10.5 rebounds per game average this past week kept her eighth in the PacWest (8.2 rpg).
Senior guard
Zoie Sheng averaged 16.5 points per game in the two previous wins, getting nearly half of those from the free throw line. She tied the program record with a 12-for-12 performance from the foul line
against Hawaii Pacific and now ranks fifth in the PacWest with a .840 free throw percentage. She stayed near her assist per game average (4.7) with nine in the two games and ranks 18th in NCAA DII in total assists (89). Next up after Sheng's eighth-ranked 15.9 points per game scoring average is senior guard
Regina Camera at 14th (13.7 ppg). Camera is second on the team in rebounding (5.5 rpg). Continuing the Knights' scoring depth is senior guard
Sha'Nice Storey who comes into the week averaging 11.6 points per game and ranks fourth in the PacWest in 3-point field goals made per game (2.3).
ANOTHER SIDE OF THE SEAHovering around .500 for much of the year, BYU-Hawaii won its first three games then just two of its next eight and has since split the first two of its five-game homestand. The Seasiders have defeated Fresno Pacific twice and Chaminade once to make up their three conference wins as they enter Tuesday's matchup. For a BYUH team that ranks second in the PacWest in free throw percentage (.711), Jiashan Cui (14.5 ppg) is the PacWest leader at the foul line (.897) while Celeste Claw (.868) ranks second. Despite two losses to the Seasiders last year, Academy of Art still holds a 9-4 advantage all-time.
COUGARS INCOMINGNow ranked No. 25 in the country, Azusa Pacific sustained just its first PacWest loss of the season mere days ago when California Baptist edged the Cougars 63-62. APU had defeated CBU earlier in the year 74-63 during a six-game win streak to open conference play. Azusa Pacific will host Notre Dame de Namur on Jan. 18 then travels to Holy Names on Jan. 21 prior its Jan. 23 contest at ART U. The Cougars hang their hat on their defense, ranking first in blocks per game (5.93) and second in field goal percentage (.354). Kelly Hardeman and Maggie Dumphy compose a dangerous one-two punch as both average double figures offensively and are both in the PacWest's top three in shot blocking. Hardeman averages 16.2 points and 2.0 blocks while Dumphy comes in putting up 10.0 points and 2.7 blocks per contest. Two regular season wins against APU were followed by a loss at the Cougars hand in the opening round of the 2015 PacWest Conference Tournament to make the all-time series an even 3-3.
THIRD QUARTER RUN SEPARATES KNIGHTS IN WINThe Urban Knights' pursuit of Pacific West Conference perfection continued on Jan. 16 as Academy of Art University women's basketball pulled away from Hawaii Pacific in the third quarter en route to an 82-72 victory inside Neal S. Blaisdell Center. Four of five ART U starters scored in double figures, all making contributions during a decisive 20-3 surge than took it from a one-point game to an 18-point difference heading into the fourth.
LOOKING AHEADThis weekend's contest hosting Azusa Pacific begins a four-game homestand which features games against Concordia Irvine (Jan. 27) and Chaminade (Jan. 30).
