ART U CHALLENGES VULCANS, SHARKS, SEASIDERS ON THE ISLANDSMaking their second out-of-state roadtrip of the season, Academy of Art University volleyball is set to take on UH Hilo, Hawaii Pacific, and BYU-Hawaii in a continuation of Pacific West Conference play this week.
FIRST SERVEStarting on the Big Island, ART U faces UH Hilo inside UHH Gymnasium on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. (10 p.m. PT). From there, the Knights will hop to Oahu where they take on Hawaii Pacific inside Saint Andrew's Priory this Friday, Sept. 25 again at 7 p.m. (10 p.m. PT). The trip concludes Saturday in Laie when Academy of Art goes up against BYU-Hawaii inside the Cannon Activities Center at 2 p.m. HT (5 p.m. PT). Live coverage will be available via the links above. HELLO HILO With a record of 2-2 on the year, UH Hilo opened 2015 by falling to Cal State Los Angeles before defeating Felician twice and dropping another to BYU-Hawaii. Led by Morgan Lees' 4.08 points, 3.58 digs, and 0.67 service aces per set, the Vulcans lead the PacWest in service aces (1.93) and opponent blocks, holding the other side to only 1.07 per match. Additionally, Shelby Harguess is the conference's top hitter at .404 through her first 52 attacks. Academy of Art and UH Hilo have met 10 times previously with the Vulcans holding an 8-2 edge.
SHARK ATTACKFollowing an up and down opening tournament, Hawaii Pacific went on a winning streak starting Sept. 11 and has not lost in its past five matches. Defeating Alaska, MSU Billings, Seattle Pacific, Concordia Irvine, and Holy Names, the Sharks have conceded just one set in that span. Elizabeth Culpepper and Pomai Recca are HPU's top hitters at 3.37 and 3.34 kills per set respectively. The all-time matchup between ART U and HPU favors the Sharks 8-3.
ON A DIFFERENT SIDE OF THE SEAComing off a 2014 season in which they were runners-up at the NCAA National Championship Finals, BYU-Hawaii has started 2015 rather differently. The Seasiders went 2-2 in the Hawaii Invitational Tournament then fell in all four of their matches as part of the GNAC/Crossover Tournament where they faced Northwest Nazarene, Western Washington, No. 11 Alaska Anchorage, and Central Washington. BYUH opened PacWest play with a 3-2 win over UH Hilo and will face Dominican on Sept. 25 prior to meeting the Knights. Sinamoni Tonga leads BYU-Hawaii with 3.11 kills per set despite a .071 hitting percentage. Academy of Art has yet to defeat the Seasiders in 11 historical matches.
VOLLEYBALL DROPS PACWEST OPENER TO NDNUIt was not the Pacific West Conference opener ART U volleyball had wanted on
Sept. 19 inside Walter Gleason Gym. Despite a valiant effort particularly in the second set, Academy of Art fell 3-0 to Notre Dame de Namur.
LOOKING AHEADThe Knights return from Hawaii with three local PacWest matches during the first seven days of October. It begins on Thursday, Oct. 1 with ART U's home opener against Holy Names, continues with a rematch against NDNU inside Kezar Pavilion on Oct. 3, and concludes on Oct. 7 at Dominican.
