Baseball Falls in Series Finale at CSUEB

Box Score

HAYWARD, Calif. — Free passes got the best of the Academy of Art University baseball team Sunday, as Cal State East Bay capitalized on 11 walks to win the finale of a four-game series 10-0 at Pioneer Field.

The Urban Knights (1-5) had five more hits Sunday to end the series with 27 total and continued to keep their strikeout total low with only two Ks at the plate, but 11 walks and a hit batsmen coupled with three defensive errors gave the Pioneers (3-1) all the base runners they would need.

Cal State East Bay's (3-1) first four runs of the game came via runners who had walked and its 10th and final run of the game came on a bases-loaded RBI walk. The Pioneers left the bases loaded three times in the game en route to stranding 12 total runners.

Junior center fielder Joseph Marchini raised his season average to .304 with his second straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. Junior third baseman Brett Adami stretched his hitting streak to three games Sunday by reaching base twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk.

Cal State East Bay took a 2-0 lead in the second inning with runs on an infield single and a sacrifice squeeze bunt after Daniel Carney and Marcus Williams had drawn leadoff and one-out walks, respectively. The lead grew to 4-0 the next inning after the Pioneers loaded the bases with no outs on three straight walks to start the inning.

CSUEB had its biggest inning in the bottom of the seventh when it scored half its runs with half its total hits in the game. A five-run, five-hit frame included four RBI singles and a bases-loaded walk to Rudy Navarro. Navarro had a double, scored a run and drew the walk to tally an RBI all in the same inning.

Carney was the lone Pioneer with a multiple-hit day, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a walk. Navarro reached base four times with three walks and a double.

Senior starting pitcher Yoshi Uemura (0-1) took the loss with four earned runs on six walks in two innings pitched. Freshman reliever Kevin Herron and junior reliever Jacob Green combined to throw 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, limiting CSUEB to two hits.

Academy of Art next hosts Northwest Nazarene of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in a four-game series beginning with a doubleheader Friday at Laney College.
