Comeback Falls Short As CSUDH Tops ART U

CARSON, Calif. – Resilience throughout kept Academy of Art University women's basketball in stride with Cal State Dominguez Hills, but the Toros wound up edging ART U 88-82 in the end inside their Torodome on Tuesday afternoon. Even through two quarters, a seven-point differential in the third quarter gave CSUDH an advantage that allowed them to outlast ART U. Senior guard Sha'Nice Storey played a major role in her squad's late comeback attempt, becoming the fourth Urban Knight to score 1,000 career points.

Though CSUDH went ahead 9-2 early, baskets by each of ART U's four-year seniors steadily brought them back during an 8-2 response. Senior guard Zoie Sheng hit back-to-back 3-pointers and soon senior guard Regina Camera found junior forward Pre'Franz Dominick for a game-tying layup in the final 30 seconds of the opening period.

Neither team led by more than four points throughout a tightly-played second quarter. With three minutes left, Storey knocked down a jumper then senior guard Jasmin Guinn stole the ball for a breakaway layup to give Academy of Art a 37-35 lead, but the Toros would go back in front 41-40 at the half despite Storey's 3-pointer in the final minute.

Storey had another triple for the lead early in the second half, however, a 12-0 run by Cal State Dominguez Hills drastically shifted the momentum. Dominick and Guinn helped the Knights remain resilient, scoring to keep the lead in single digits heading into the fourth quarter. There, CSUDH pushed as large a margin as 15 points with two minutes left, but an 11-2 surge capped by two Storey triples to end the game made it significantly closer. In the end, time ran out on the ART U comeback as the Toros prevailed 88-82.

Academy of Art, now 4-4 overall, was led by Guinn's 20 points and 14 rebounds along with five steals. It was her second double-double of the year. Storey turned in a season-high 18 points with four 3-pointers made while Sheng finished with 17 points, also with four triples, and five assists. Dominick turned her own season-high of 13 points off the bench and Camera added nine points with seven assists.

"I thought Pre'Franz stepped up big and continues to progress," said head coach LaNay Larson. "She is just going to get better and better with more experience and confidence. My core senior guards fought hard with some tired legs during this tough stretch of games so now we just have to recover and get ready for another tough weekend at East Bay."

Cal State Dominguez Hills improves to 3-4 overall after Garcia delivered a game-high 31 points with nine rebounds. Imari Brown came off the bench to score 15 points in 25 minutes.

ART U enters its final non-conference tournament of the year, the CCAA/PacWest Challenge, this Friday. The Knights will first take on Cal State Monterey Bay (Nov. 27) at 2 p.m. then meets Cal State East Bay (Nov. 28) at 4 p.m.
