Laudat Nets First Goal, But ART U Falls 2-1

Box Score
San Francisco, CA – Battling back from an early 1-0 deficit, Urban Knights Women's Soccer scored the equalizer soon after the start of the second period, but host San Francisco State wound up 2-1 winners on Saturday. Academy of Art and SF State competed hard across every inch of green at a spacious Cox Stadium and it was a Gators goal in the 75th minute that served as the turning point.

"It was a back and forth match," head coach Katie Awerkamp said. "We changed things up after struggling in the first half and I was really happy with how we responded in the second. But I tell the girls it's a 90-minute game and we have to be alert from start to finish.

A little more than six and a half minutes in, SF State's Autumn Fox managed to get free for a shot off her stomach in front of the goal following Elizet Ceja's cross. The Knights remained focused, however, and created several opportunities that featured attempts by Rea Laudat, Maddie Shelton, and Sophie Meneses.

In the second half, Kayla Pritchett broke away from the SFSU defense for a quality look only to have her shot bounce off the body of goalkeeper Allison Land. But the rebound found Laudat at the penalty kick mark and she eased the ball into the net with Land out of position.

Now with 1-1 on the scoreboard, the teams went back to work and it was Rachael Rempe who continued to ward off attempts, totaling four saves in the match. However, in the 76th minute, a corner kick by Kelsey Wetzstein came to Brittany Oldham who used a heel touch to free herself for a shot to the far upper corner. From there, SF State held on and came away with a victory in its home opener.

Academy of Art (0-2) continues to face its string of CCAA opponents with Humboldt State (Sept. 11) and Cal State Stanislaus (Sept. 13) this coming week.

"We have to become fitter mentally and physically and I'm hoping we bounce back on Thursday," Coach Awerkamp said.
