San Francisco, CA -- Facing their first Division I opponent of the 2014 season, the Academy of Art University women's tennis team took off from the start and beat Weber State for the second time in two years to move to 9-1 on the season. The Urban Knights took two of three in doubles play and even the two points for the Wildcats (5-5) saw spirited efforts by the home team, with both of those matches going to the tie breaking sets.

"It wasn't our best day but still came away with the win," said head coach Beth Daub. "Even when our girls aren't having the best day they still find a way to get it done."

The Knights came out by taking two of three in doubles play, as Michelle Dandik Zaale & Annika Schneider finished first, taking down Michelle Warwick & Ashley Tanner in third doubles 8-5. Lucia Zavarcikova & Jenny Johansson stayed undefeated on the season with an 8-6 win over Thais Kurer & Nittaya Phonharath, improving to 8-0 here in the spring as doubles partners. Daniela Amelunge Antelo & Nina Gajdosikova fell in first singles after a long battle, falling to Agata Bachanek & Kristi Elmer 9-8 (7-4).

Heading to singles play, the Knights went up 3-1 after a quick win from Dandik Zaale in third singles, who beat Tanner 6-1, 6-1. Johansson in fifth singles also won, beating Phonharath 6-0, 6-1, while Gajdosikova beat Bachanek in the first slot 6-4, 6-3. Daniela Amelunge Antelo took three sets but stayed undefeated in singles play with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win in fourth singles over Kurer, while Kinga Kurczbuch went to three sets and a tiebreaker to defeat Annika Karlsen 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 11-9. The lone singles loss was by Zavarcikova, who won the first set 6-3 but fell 6-1 in the second and was behind 4-1 in the third before she retired with the match already decided in favor of the Urban Knights.

"I think playing a Division I team and winning is great for the teams mindset," said Daub. "They know if we put our mind to something it can be accomplished. Now we're looking forward to our match on Sunday."

The Knights will host Dominican University, who was recently ranked 10th in the West Region, on Sunday at the San Francisco Tennis Club at 11:00 AM.
