San Diego, CA -- The Academy of Art University women's golf team stayed where they started the day and got some outstanding improvements from their individual golfers as the Urban Knights finished the Super San Diego Women's Golf Championship in fourth place to kick off their spring season. Crystal Wang had the biggest jump of the day and made a late charge to finish fifth in the individual standings in the final round.

"It is important to be able to finish strong," said head coach Elaine Harris. "Today we showed we could do this in the second round.  I know we will continue to get better. I'm really happy with the way we played and I look forward to seeing how low we can go as a team in the upcoming tournaments."

The Urban Knights had four of their five golfers improve from the first day to the final round and dropped six strokes to finish the day with a 638. Host Point Loma Nazarene University was leading heading into the clubhouse yesterday, but the Sea Lions were overtaken after adding 10 strokes to their score. California Baptist shot a 305 to finish at 622 and take the tournament, while Lee University was only three strokes back at 625. PLNU (626) finished in third place, with the Knights taking fourth. Cal State East Bay (643) rounded out the top five, while the other PacWest teams were farther down in the standings. Dixie State took seventh place, while Dominican finished 12th and Holy Names finished 17th.

Crystal Wang had the biggest day for the Knights, shooting a 1-over 73, the second-lowest score of the final round, that catapulted her into fifth place overall. Roxanne Matta knocked a stroke off her score to shoot a 78 and finish tied for 13th, while Deanna Tyndall struggled in the second day and finished tied for 32nd. Sierra Sanchez and Melissa Genao also improved on their scores from the first day and embodied their coach's desire to finish strong. California Baptist had two of the top three finishers, as Nathalie Silva (+3) won outright and Marvi Monsalve (+10) took third. Natalie Park also shot a +8, but was playing as an individual. Courtney Shelton (Lee) shot her second straight 75 to finish at +6 in second place. Haley Dunn (DSU) tied for third, while Wang and Andrea Mersino (PLNU) were both 11-over to tie for fifth.

The Urban Knights will be back on the course at California Baptist for the Victoria Club Intercollegiate on February 24-25th.
