SAN BRUNO, Calif. — The Academy of Art University women's soccer team wasn't ready for its season to be over quite yet Saturday, so the Urban Knights played into overtime against Notre Dame de Namur after honoring four seniors in a pregame ceremony. It was the Argonauts who came away with the golden goal victory though, scoring in the 95th minute to win 2-1 at Skyline College.
Â
Seniors Louise Fillingham, Sophie Meneses, Rachael Rempe and Marley Sutter all played in their final games as Urban Knights Saturday. The quartet ended their careers having played in a combined 220 games for Academy of Art while tallying 28 total career points. Rempe had three saves Saturday to finish 2014 with 95 – fourth-most in a single season at ART U. She leaves with career records in saves (282), goals against average (1.87), wins (13) and shutouts (8), and single-season records in save percentage (.790), goals against average (1.60), wins (7) and shutouts (5), all set in 2012.
Â
Academy of Art (3-14-1, 3-9-0 Pacific West Conference) took a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute after a scoreless first half in which both teams were deadlocked in all categories. On Senior Day, it was the youth who sparked the Urban Knights. Sophomore Laura Mick scored her first career goal off an assist from redshirt freshman Kendall Bozart to put the Knights ahead.
Â
Bozart fired a shot from 22 yards away that nearly made it inside the left post but bounced off it instead. Mick was there to collect the rebound and net the goal. Mick was heavily involved in the offense Saturday, tying for a team-high four shots, including a team-best two on goal.
Â
The lead didn't last long however, as less than a minute later the Argonauts (5-12-1, 3-8-1 PacWest) pulled even on a goal from Jessica Santos. Santos took a through pass from Maritza Gomez after the restart, split the Urban Knights defense and beat Rempe low and right to tuck the ball inside the right post for the goal.
Â
The score stayed tied through the rest of regulation as the teams fell back into their first half deadlock. Into the first overtime ART U immediately went on the attack, getting a shot from Sutter 44 seconds in. But it would be Santos once again to win the game with her second goal of the afternoon.
Â
The ball was launched into Urban Knights territory and bounced along towards the goal. Santos came running in and headed it back in the air over the ART U defense. The ball sailed over Rempe, and Santos gave chase further into the box as the ball rolled into the goal for the game-winner.
Â
The Knights outshot NDNU 19-12, including 10-4 in the second half.
