Knights Send Seniors Out With A Sweep

Box Score

San Francisco, CA – On an emotional 'Senior Knight,' ART U Volleyball was extremely efficient in its 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-12) sweep of Holy Names. The Urban Knights united following a special pre-match ceremony honoring Brittany Ulmer and Kanoe Irvine, using runs of 6-0 then 7-0 in each of the first two sets to create tremendous momentum towards their victorious finale.

Academy of Art made an initial push in the first set, rattling off four points with kills by junior Isabel Emrich and sophomore Emily Papale after being tied 4-4. The Hawks hung around and came as close as two points, 17-15, but from there the Knights scored seven of the next eight points to win 25-16. ART U capitalized on HNU miscues while Irvine continued to serve with complete confidence.

Even to 5-5, the second set suddenly shifted in favor of Academy of Art with a 7-0 surge keyed by three kills apiece from Emrich and Papale as well as a service ace for Brum. The lead soon grew to 17-7 on back-to-back kills from Ulmer and, while Holy Names showed some life, ART U proceeded to score six of seven to force set point and ultimately win 25-14 on a HNU service error.

The Knights wasted little time establishing a lead in the third set, going up 8-3 out of the gate thanks to kills by Brum, an Ulmer service ace, and a put-away for freshman Margaret Winkler. The Hawks were limited to relatively isolated points for the remainder of the set while ART U built a 21-8 advantage on an 11-3 push that at one point saw junior Rachael Smith set Brum three consecutive times for the terminating spike. In the end, it was Academy of Art the victor 25-12 after Papale slammed home two of the final three points.

The Urban Knights improve to 12-13 overall and 7-10 in PacWest play led by sophomore Melissa Brum's 18th double-double in the form of 13 kills and 15 digs. Papale added 10 kills, Emrich finished with 8 kills, and Winkler added five block assists. Smith delivered 37 assists along with seven digs.

ART U's seniors both excelled in their final home game as Ulmer posted six kills and Irvine finished with 13 digs. Ulmer's two service aces combined with one from Irvine to further their hold of the top two positions on the program's career list. Irvine is the first Knight to reach triple digits with 103 aces while Ulmer is not far behind with 91 to date.

Academy of Art may be finished with its 2014 home schedule, but three matches still remain this year. This Saturday, Nov. 8, ART U returns to action with a rematch at Fresno Pacific set for 7:00 PM inside FPU's Special Events Center.
