Box Score Laie, HI – Going with a different lineup on Saturday night inside the Cannon Activities Center, Urban Knights Volleyball took a tough 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-16) loss to BYU-Hawaii. Up against a team ranked ranked #5 in the country and #3 in the West Region, Academy of Art still saw career numbers from individuals such as sophomore
Kabrina Speakman and freshman
Bailey Soolsma.
Anyone's set early, the opener was 7-7 before the Seasiders went on a 5-1 run getting points exclusively from Shih Ting Chen and Erh Fang Hsu. The run turned into an 18-5 push that featured isolated kills by senior
Brittany Ulmer, freshman
Bailey Soolsma (in her first start of her career), and sophomores
Emily Papale and
Kabrina Speakman. The end result was a 25-12 set victory for BYUH.
A highly competitive second set was tied several times early as back-to-back kills by Speakman helped the Knights get it to 10-10. From 18-18, BYU-Hawaii used a brief three-point swing to get ahead and they would not relinquish the lead. An Ulmer service ace made it 22-21 BYUH, but the Seasiders scored the final three points to win the set 25-21.
In the third frame, it was the Urban Knights who went ahead 10-7 on another ace by Ulmer as part of a 5-2 run. BYU-Hawaii, however, came back to tie it 13-13 and, from there, closed out the set and match on a 12-3 stretch. The home team would win match point 25-16.
The Knights return from their Hawaii roadtrip 11-13 overall and 6-10 in PacWest action. Speakman set a new career-high with nine kills along with nine digs while Soolsma added a new career-high of five kills. Papale finished with nine kills and nine digs as well and Smith totaled 28 assists. Irvine was solid defensively, putting up 15 digs through three sets.
ART U returns home this week for its 'Senior Knight' on Thursday, Nov. 6, hosting Holy Names at 7:30 PM. That contest inside Kezar Pavilion will be followed by three road contests – at Fresno Pacific (Nov. 8), Dominican (Nov. 13), and Notre Dame de Namur (Nov. 15).
