Box Score SAN DIEGO — After playing even for more than 89 minutes Saturday, Point Loma Nazarene got a game-winning goal from Matt Rose with just 48 seconds left to steal a 1-0 victory over the Academy of Art University men's soccer team at PLNU Soccer Field.
Â
The Urban Knights (4-8, 2-4 PacWest) had appeared to grab all the momentum in the second half of a 0-0 game. They outshot the Sea Lions (4-7-2, 4-3-1 PacWest) 10-6 in the period and earned five corner kicks to PLNU's one, a sign of their dominating possession in the final 45 minutes.
Â
But with the clock ticking towards 90 minutes and inevitable overtime, Rose was left with a one-on-one situation with ART U freshman goalkeeper
Alejandro Escobedo. Rose would win the matchup, and the game, with a left-footed shot from the top of the goalkeeper box.
Â
The 1-0 defeat was Academy of Art's third straight one-goal loss and fourth overall in 2014. Its last two losses saw game-winning goals scored in the final 78 seconds or later. The Urban Knights have seen goals scored in the last two minutes or later of their last four games. For PLNU it was its third win in a row and extends the Sea Lions' unbeaten streak to five games.
Â
Academy of Art returns home next week for a two-game homestand starting at 11 a.m. Thursday at Crocker Amazon Park versus BYU-Hawaii.
