OPENING SERVE
The Academy of Art University women's volleyball team has shown flashes of brilliance in their opening month of the season, but has had a hard time finishing off their opponents. Last week they won the first set against California Baptist and then again on Tuesday in their matchup with Dixie State, but fell in the overall match to both teams. The Urban Knights are encouraged, however, by their efforts in those early sets, and will be working on sustaining that success through the whole match.
YOUTH IN REVOLT
The freshman duo of Emily Papale and Melissa Brum have burst onto the scene for the Knights, and have combined for 245 kills already this season. Papale is leading the team with 126 kills, while Brum is right behind her with 119, with both being ranked in the top 20 in kills per set in the PacWest. Papale, out of Cardinal Newman High School, set a record her senior year with 639 kills. Brum, from St. Mary's High School in Stockton, CA, was part of a Rams team that went 48-0 in conference play while she was part of the team.
ARGOS AMIDST FIVE-GAME SLIDE
Notre Dame de Namur has struggled as of late, as they defeated Saint Martin's back on September 13th but haven't won wince, dropping games to Humboldt State, Alaska Fairbanks, and their first three PacWest contests to start the conference schedule. The Argonauts are led on offense by their junior outside hitter Brooke DeMiguel, who has 126 kills on the year and is averaging 3.15 kills per set. Jaqueline Harper has 426 assists (10.92 per set) while Michelle Hines is leading the team with 186 digs. Paulina Akiona has 25.0 total blocks to lead the Argos.
WATCH IT LIVE
After last year's breakout campaign across the board, the Academy of Art University athletic department found itself searching for a way to bring the Urban Knights experience to the masses. Now, at the start of the fall season, ART U has officially announced it will join with Stretch Internet to provide live video coverage of home volleyball matches in 2013. Fans can follow all the action via the ART U Athletics Game Central for the remainder of the home schedule.
SETTING IT UP
After the quick road trip, the Urban Knights will play host to three of the four Hawaiian schools, taking on Chaminade on Wednesday, Hawaii Pacific University on Thursday, and UH Hilo on Monday, with all games starting at 7:00 PM at Kezar Pavilion.
