OPENING SERVE
It was deja vu all over again for the Academy of Art University volleyball team in the Route 92 Showdown, as they went into the tournament with a .500 record and came out of it with a .500 record, splitting both days just as they had in the Otter Classic. The Knights did however set some impressive precedents, sweeping Saint Martin's in the final match of the tournament while holding the Saints to a minuscule .055 hitting percentage.
CBU IN UNCHARTED WATERS
After their first year in the PacWest Conference last year, California Baptist volleyball found themselves in third place overall, going 19-8 overall and ending the year with a 12-4 conference record. Only a month into the 2013 season, the Lancers have already lost five matches, more than half of last year's total. They are still a force to be reckoned with, as CBU has played two teams ranked in the top 25 in their past tournament, falling to #13 UC San Diego and #18 Cal State San Bernardino. The Lancers are led by Kim McCalmont on offense, who is averaging 3.38 kills per set, while Taylor Parker is averaging 10 assists per set.
BOUNCING BACK BETTER
The Urban Knights have now played games on four separate days, playing two games in each day, and on three of those four gamedays, they have lost the early match but come back to win the closing match. At the Route 92 Showdown, ART U came back to sweep both of the evening matches, defeating University of Alaska – Fairbanks 3-0 behind a .463 hitting percentage and dropping Saint Martin's behind a 12-block effort from their defense.
SEA LIONS POINTING UP
Point Loma finished 10-17 last season but has jumped out to a 6-3 start this season leading into conference play, sweeping all four matches of the Seaside Invitational. On the final day of the Triton Invitational last weekend, they split a pair of five-set matches, winning 3-2 over Cal State San Bernardino but falling 2-3 to Cal Poly Pomona. The Sea Lions are led by Heather Leavitt and Alyssa Dwyer, who have both surpassed 100 kills on the season. Leavitt has 127 total kills and 3.97 kills per set, while Dwyer is right at 100 kills, averaging 3.03 per set. Savannah Wedemeyer has 369 assists, while McKensey Wise leads the team with 21 total blocks.
KNIGHTS ON THE BLOCK
The Urban Knights have set up their own block party in San Francisco, currently leading the PacWest at 2.22 blocks per set. They have 71 total blocks, and are led by junior Lindsay Elgin, who has made up more than half of those blocks (42.0) and also leads the team with a .388 hitting percentage. Fellow middle blocker Caitlin Boring, the Knights only senior, has similar numbers, notching 22 total blocks. Brittany Ulmer has also emerged lately, putting up 18 total blocks and hitting at a .342 clip. Overall, the Knights have six players with at least 10 blocks, out blocking their opponents 71.0 to 52.0 on the year.
DIXIE KEEPING IT EVEN
The Red Storm is sitting at 3-3 after their most recent run at the I.C. Bhakta Volleyball Invitational. Dixie State defeated New Mexico Highlands 3-2 and Western State Colorado University 3-0, but fell to Western New Mexico University 1-3 and Colorado Mesa 1-3. The Red Storm are led by outside hitter Shannon Young, who is averaging 3.86 kills per set and has 75 kills overall. Shelby Sorenson has 241 assists, while libero Alex Anderson has totaled 121 digs. Nicole Koehler has 45 kills and 24 blocks from the right side for Dixie State.
WATCH IT LIVE
After last year's breakout campaign across the board, the Academy of Art University athletic department found itself searching for a way to bring the Urban Knights experience to the masses. Now, at the start of the fall season, ART U has officially announced it will join with Stretch Internet to provide live video coverage of home volleyball matches in 2013. Fans can follow all the action via the ART U Athletics Game Central, starting with the volleyball games this week.
SETTING IT UP
After the three-game home stand, the Urban Knights will "hit the road" to play Notre Dame de Namur before another three-game stretch at Kezar Pavilion when they host three of the four Hawaiian schools.
