OPENING SERVE
The Academy of Art University women's volleyball team fought their way into the championship match of the 2013 Otter Classic hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay after wins against San Francisco State and the host Otters. They faced off against the Gators of SF State in the championship match but fell in three sets after a 31-29 loss in the first set. Juniors Brittany Ulmer and Lindsay Elgin were named to the All-Tournament Team.
COACH ED SAYS
"Overall the lessons learned was the importance of being mentally engaged and compete with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. I was proud of how we learned from the mistakes in the match against Saint Martin's and managed to defeat two teams we have never beaten in the program's young history. We have definitely closed the gap with the elite in the NCAA and are looking forward to practices this week as we prepare for Humboldt State."
ROUTE 92 SHOWDOWN CENTRAL
The Urban Knights will be playing all of their matches at the Route 92 Showdown on the East side of Route 92, as all four will be hosted by Cal State East Bay. After facing Humboldt State in the early morning game on Friday, they'll take on University of Alaska-Fairbanks later that afternoon. ART U has won two straight against Humboldt State, including a five-setter last year, and have never faced Alaska-Fairbanks in the two programs' history. On the second day, they'll take on Cal State Monterey and then Saint Martin's University, who defeated them in the opener of the Otter Classic. Full tournament page HERE.
PARTY OF FIVE
After their seven matches going to five sets last season, the Urban Knights continued the trend of drawn out contests into the 2013 season. Their two victories of the tournament came on 3-2 wins, which already put out there that the Knights are looking to change the tune from 2012 when they were 1-6 in those contests. In addition to the five sets, the Knights went over the allotted 25 points as well, winning the first game 27-25. That five-set mentality continued against Cal State Monterey Bay, as the Knights won a close battle that included a pair of 25-23 wins and a 27-25 loss on the way to another 3-2 victory. To cap it all off, they opened the championship with a marathon 31-29 set against SF State in the final.
SETTING IT UP
After the tournament season concludes, the Urban Knights will dive headlong into the Pacific West Conference slate, taking on California Baptist, last year's third-place team, to start the year on September 19. After that they'll host Point Loma (Sep. 20) and Dixie State (Sep. 24) before hitting the road.
