LEADING OFF
The Academy of Art University baseball team had a tough series in Phoenix last week, falling in a four-game set to Grand Canyon to open the PacWest slate.
Myles Babitt picked up four hits in the series, while
Stefen Henderson had three hits, two for extra bases.
CBU GETTING LATE START ON PACWEST SCHEDULE
The Lancers have already played 14 games this year, but their series with Academy of Art will be their first conference action of the year. California Baptist comes in after sweeping a two-game series with La Sierra to get back to the .500 mark. On offense, the Lancers are led by the Esquerra brothers, who rank as the top two hitters on the team. Zach Esquerra is batting .340 and already has three home runs on the season, while his brother Luke is batting .333 in fourteen games. On the mound, Jon Bengard has had a successful start to the year, turning in a 3-0 record with a 1.54 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 35 innings.
HENDERSON GOING EXTRA MILE
Senior
Stefen Henderson has racked up a fair amount of hits over his career, and on the current leaderboards, leads the Urban Knights in every extra-base hit category. Henderson's 30 doubles, eight triples, and eight homers are all either first or tied for first in program history. He also leads the Knights in walks (78) drawing 24 more free passes than the next highest player.
ON DECK
After the home series with the Lancers, the Urban Knights will technically play "on the road" against Holy Names University, who also call Laney College their home field. The pair of doubleheaders (March 15-16) will be away games for the Knights, and the two teams will clash again later in the year with ART U as the home squad.
