Rough Start Spells Defeat In Series Finale

Box Score

Phoenix, AZ -- In the series finale against Grand Canyon, the Academy of Art baseball team spotted the Antelopes an early lead with a seven-run first inning and weren't able to recover, falling 16-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Urban Knights were forced to go to the bullpen early, and left eight runners on base in the loss.

Nicholas Boyett got the nod on getaway day, but was unable to get out of the first inning. The freshman started out the game on the wild side, hitting the lead-off batter and letting him get down to second on a wild pitch. Grand Canyon drew first blood with the next batter, as Seth Freitheim doubled in the first run of the game. Three hits, three errors, two walks, and a pitching change later, the Antelopes were up 7-0 after the first, and that set the mood for the rest of the game.

The Lopes added on to their lead as the game went on, scoring two in the third, three in the fourth, and three more in the fifth. The Urban Knights got one back in the seventh inning when a single from Tino Leite knocked in James Singzon, who had drawn a walk earlier in the inning, but GCU added one more in the bottom of the eighth off of Leite to get to the final score of 16-1.

The Urban Knights got four hits, two from Leite and one each from Ryan Ramirez and Joey Marchini, while Ryan Donahoe threw 2.1 scoreless innings on the mound. They return from Phoenix and will be back in action on Friday against California Baptist for the start of a four game series.
