Urban Knights Tripped Up In Hawaii Opener

Box Score
Honolulu, HI -- The Academy of Art University women's volleyball team headed into Hawaii with their eyes on a successful trip, but that outlook hit a brief speed bump to start off, as the Chaminade Silverswords evened up the season series by defeating the Knights at McCabe Gymnasium on Thursday night. The Knights got 11 kills on a .321 hitting night from Emily Papale, but fell in three sets 25-15, 25-21, 25-21.

The Urban Knights fell in the first set, after Chaminade went on a run to break a 5-5 tie, running the score to 12-7 before head coach Ed Jackson took a timeout. The Knights got it back to 18-13, but the Silverswords pushed all the way to 20-13 before another timeout. After forcing an error and then getting a kill from Emily Papale, Chaminade blocked the next attempt and took the first set 25-15.

In the second set, they rebounded on the attack but still ended up at the disadvantage. It was back and forth for a long time, with the Knights tying it up at 18-18 on a kill from Lindsay Elgin. But the Silverswords got three straight points to take a 21-18 lead, and even with the Knights fighting back, they fell on a kill from Cassie Rushlow by a score of 25-21.

The third set was somewhere in the middle of the two, as the Knights took an early lead but lost it midway through. The Swords took the game from a 4-4 tie to an 18-11 lead, but down to their final chances, ART U clawed back into it, taking it from 23-13 all the way back to 24-21. That's as close as they would get, though, as the Swords got a kill from their leader Kim Spring to end it at 25-21.

Papale's 11 kills led ART U on the attack, while Lindsay Elgin had six kills and six total blocks. Rachael Smith had 25 assists, while Caitlin Boring and Brittany Ulmer each had four total blocks. Crystal Powell had 10 kills to lead the Swords, while Danielle Montoya and Valentin Bevilacqua combined for 30 assists.

The Knights will be back in action tomorrow night at #5 BYU-Hawaii before finishing up the road trip on Saturday night against UH Hilo.Â
