Riverside, CA -- The Academy of Art University volleyball team's trip through Southern California ended on a difficult note on Saturday night against California Baptist, as the Urban Knights couldn't reclaim their momentum from Friday night's game. The Knights fought valiantly, but couldn't overcome last year's PacWest Newcomer of the Year Ingrid Carmona, who led the Lancers to hand ART U a 3-0 defeat.
The first set started with the Knights hanging with the Lancers in the beginning, holding with them at a 7-6 mark until CBU started to put runs together to make it a 18-8 swing to take the set. ART U battled again in the second set, keeping it tied as late as 13-13 before the Lancers took control to take an 18-15 lead and eventually win the set on a kill by Carmona, 25-19. California Baptist jumped out to an early lead in the third set 14-5, but the Knights never stopped battling, bringing it to an 8-point game at 20-12, but unable to stop the Lancers advance to the match victory with a 25-14 win.
Carmona led all players with 18 kills, as the Lancers won all three sets, 14-25, 19-25, 14-25. The Urban Knights were led by
Caitlin Boring, who had six kills and one total block, while also hitting at a .500 clip.
Holli "Ka'ena" Kaina added five kills, while the Knights struggled to get anything going against the Lancers defense.
Janelle Burnett led the Knights with nine digs.
The Urban Knights will be back home in the Bay Area to host UH Hilo next week on Friday, Sep. 28, and then will host Chaminade and Dominican the week after that on Oct. 3 and Oct. 6, respectively.
