OPENING SERVE
The Urban Knights faced some resurgent Bay Area foes last week, falling short against Holy Names University and Dominican University. The Knights will look to right the ship away from home as they take on two of the newest PacWest members this week in PLNU and Azusa Pacific.
SEA LIONS IN CENTURY CLUB
Point Loma Nazarene University has two members of their team that have already racked up over 100 on the year, as freshman Kelli LeClair (137 kills) and sophomore Delaney McCraney (119 kills) are both in the top 10 in the conference for the Sea Lions. PLNU lost their conference opener against Azusa Pacific and has lost two in a row after winning two in a row at the Pacific Coast Classic. This is the first matchup between the two teams.
SUCHY MAKING INSTANT IMPACT
Freshman
Taylor Suchy is making her presence known for the Urban Knights, and in the early going is the second-leading scorer on the team behind senior
Angela Heath. She is already on the cusp of breaking 100 kills in the first ten games of her career, and despite it being a small sample size, is high up on the career lists for kills per game, points per game, and digs per game. For her efforts, she was named to the
PacWest Weekly Fantastic 15 in the first week of the season.
COUGARS WELCOME CHANGE
Azusa Pacific got their first PacWest victory last week against PLNU, and currently boast the conference's top attacker in terms of total kills. Junior outside hitter Jackie Landers is atop the PacWest with 168 kills here in 2012, putting her in third place in kills per set (4.10). Setter Sophie Burns ranks just behind ART U setter
Rachael Smith in assists per set, and freshman Ashley Vander Tuig has the second-most blocks in the conference with 50 total blocks. This is also the first matchup between the Knights and the Cougars.
CARMONA CONTINUES TO LEAD LANCERS
Ingrid Carmona made quite an impression in 2011, garnering PacWest Newcomer of the Year honors while notching 579 kills and 385 digs and earning a spot on the All-PacWest First Team in the Lancers first year in the conference. That leadership on the court hasn't changed, as she has 155 kills in 2012, almost double that of the next-highest attacker on the CBU roster. The Knights were 0-2 against the Lancers in 2011.
SETTING IT UP
After their road trip to Southern California, the Urban Knights will be back in town for a three-game homestand against UH Hilo (Sep. 28), Chaminade (Oct. 3), and Dominican (Oct. 6).
