FIRST PITCH
The Urban Knights had another 1-3 road trip, this time to Dixie State, as they were led by strong pitching performances in the first doubleheader to gain the split. The Knights have shown that if they put together a game where they pitch well and play defense, their small-ball offense can run the opponents into some trouble, which is what happened in the 3-2 victory over the Red Storm.
NATE THE GREAT
After
Zach Mexicano had a brilliant outing to get the Knights their first win, redshirt freshman
Nate Gercken contributed a gem of his own to get them their second, going five innings and giving up zero runs, but getting a no-decision. Rebounding from a rough beginning to the year, Gercken has pitched extremely well. Only recently, after his second outing against Cal Baptist, his ERA was an inflated 9.61, but since then he has thrown sixteen innings while only giving up two earned runs, lowering that number to 5.80.
FAIRWEATHER FANS
Brad Fairweather is in his first year as a Vulcan after transferring from Olympic College and is making his mark on the Hilo baseball team, ranking as one of their best all-around offensive players. Fairweather is second on the team in batting average (.311) and first in on-base percentage (.440), while also leading the Vulcans in runs (16). The Knights will also have to be wary of Joshua Wong, who leads Hilo in hitting (.314) and slugging (.419), and also in hits (33) and RBIs (15). Bryan Raines is leading the pitching staff with a 5.50 ERA and two complete games, despite his 0-5 record. Raines has 23 strikeouts in 34.1 innings, the best ratio on the team.
ZACH ATTACK
Zach Babitt is the Urban Knights leader in many offensive categories, and the senior middle-infielder has been on base, with either a hit or a walk, in each of the past nine games, and 12 of the last 13. Zach was 4-for-14 (.286) against Grand Canyon, and then jumped out going 5-for-12 (.417) against Dixie State. His .330 average is the best on the Knights, and he also ranks first in slugging percentage (.380), hits (32), and runs (11). Babitt also has 11 multi-hit games, and is second in the PacWest in stolen bases, going 10-for-14 on theft attempts.
WHAT'S ON DECK
After ART U plays Hilo, the Urban Knights will host Cal State Stanislaus for a three-game series on April 6-7 before going on Spring Break. After the jump, they will then be home again for a two-day, four-game series against Grand Canyon on April 19-20.
