FIRST PITCH
The Urban Knights faced a tall task last week, heading into Chico to take on the nationally-ranked Wildcats for a four-game series. Chico State went into the week ranked No. 10/13, and came out of it ranked No. 6/5 in the country. The Knights got their bats going against the Wildcat pitching, but had trouble containing the Chico offense as the home team swept Academy of Art in four.

ALL TOGETHER NOW
Academy of Art has seen improvement in all categories, with flashes of brilliance from their pitching, on defense, and at the plate. But so far this year, their one challenge has been putting it all together. The fielding was solid in the early season, but the pitching was off. Then the pitching settled down, but the offense was struggling. Now the offense is clicking, but the defense has been shaky. However, head coach Brian Guinn and his staff are confident that the Knights can get all three aspects of the game on the same page.

POMEROY POWER
Michael Pomeroy of Grand Canyon doesn't care who he faces, as the Lopes first-baseman is batting a torrid .478 through the first 23 games, which is good for first in the conference, and second in Division II for players with at least 20 games played. Pomeroy is also leading the Lopes in runs (20), doubles (7), and on-base percentage (.539), but is closely followed by teammate Derek Mendoza, who is hitting at a .463 clip. Pitcher Justin Lindsey is leading the team on the mound with a 4-2 record, and Brady Wager has 43 strikeouts in only 36 innings.

FREE MASON, FREE HITS
Freshman outfielder Devin Mason got his first start of the 2012 season last week against Chico, and broke out with a 3-for-4 performance, scoring a run and driving in a run in the series finale on Sunday. Zach Babitt also continued his solid senior season, batting .375 (6 for 16) in the Chico series and raising his average to a team-high .310 mark.

WHAT'S ON DECK
The Knights will head to Utah to face Dixie State next week before returning home at the end of the month to host Hawaii Hilo at Laney College starting on March 31.
