Riverside, CA -- After the Lancers of Cal Baptist exploded against the Urban Knights in the first two games of the series, the Academy of Art pitchers contained the high-powered offense and put themselves in great position to win both games of Saturday's doubleheader, but fell in the last at-bat in both contests to drop the series. CBU edged the Knights in the first game 6-5, scoring four runs in the last three innings to walk off with the early game, and then kept the drama coming in the second game, pushing two across in the final two innings to win in extra innings, 3-2.
In game one, the Urban Knights exploded for four runs in the first inning off of Cal Baptist starter Devyn Rivera.
Myles Babitt got it started with an infield single with one out, and then advanced to second as Rivera walked second baseman
Zach Babitt.
Niko Leite reached on a fielder's choice, with Myles advancing to third, and then Kenny Rollins walked to load the bases.
Rivera then got a little erratic, throwing a wild pitch to allow Babitt to score. He then walked
James Singzon and
Stefen Henderson to force in another run. Shortstop
Wade Broadstreet singled up the middle to score Singzon and Rollins, and the Knights ended the first inning with a 4-0 lead.
Nate Gercken, who was forced out of Friday's game with a stomach bug, started the game for the Urban Knights and looked much more ready to handle the responsibilities on the mound. Although he allowed two hits and a run in the first, he went on to hold the lead until the fifth inning, when the Lancers pushed two more runs across to tie the game at 4-4. Both runs belonged to Gercken, but they scored after junior transfer
Ryan Donahoe entered the game in the middle of the fifth.
The Knights reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth, as Rollins walked to start off the inning. Singzon sacrificed him to second, and then he advanced to third on a wild pitch. Henderson struck out, but then Broadstreet walked. But Rivera lost control again, and a wild pitch brought in Rollins to give the Knights a 5-4 lead.
But Cal Baptist wouldn't let the Knights lead last for long, as Matt Daugherty singled to lead off the inning. Donahoe nailed the next batter, but then back to back walks pushed the tying run across. Donahoe was able to limit the damage, and was also able to get Matt Marnati to line out to center to leave the bases loaded.
The Knights went quietly in the top of the seventh, and the Lancers came back again in the bottom of the inning with the chance to win. Blair Moore walked to start off the inning, and was lifted for a pinch-hitter. Zach Esquerra reached on a fielder's choice, putting the winning run at second. Matt Daugherty struck out swinging, but then Donahoe (0-1) hit Ryan Douglass with a pitch to load the bases. The next batter was Andrew Montoya, who worked the count to 3-1 before he took ball four to force in the winning run for a final score of 6-5.
Myles Babitt finished the game 2-4 with a run, while Rollins had two runs scored. Broadstreet had the big triple and two RBIs for the Knights, and Donahoe had five strikeouts in the loss.
In the second game of the doubleheader,
Wade Broadstreet took the mound looking to follow up his impressive start last week where he went the distance in a complete game effort that unfortunately ended in a loss. Broadstreet put up zeroes in the first three innings, and ART U again struck first, this time in the top of the third inning.
Henderson, now at shortstop with Broadstreet pitching, had an infield single.
Bryce Hutchings then had another infield single, but Lancers pitcher Jesse Arreola threw the ball away, allowing Henderson to score and Hutchings to score all the way from first.
Johnathan Robbins was out on a bunt attempt, but
Myles Babitt got on via the bunt.
Zach Babitt then hit yet another infield single, and Rollins reached on an error.
Jared DePatto lined into a double play to end the inning, but the Knights ended the inning with a 2-0 advantage.
The Lancers got on the board the next inning, in the bottom of the fourth, as Luke Esquerra tripled and then scored on a balk. The Knights held the slim 2-1 lead until the last inning, when the Lancers got two on with nobody out against Broadstreet. After a sacrifice, the Knights were two outs away but Broadstreet hit Montoya to force in the tying run before getting Luke Esquerra to line into an inning ending double play.
With the score tied in the bottom of the eighth, Broadstreet (0-2) came out to finish the job, but the Lancers had other ideas. After getting the first batter, Marnati doubled to left, advancing to third on a wild pitch. Blair Moore was intentionally walked, and then Zach Esquerra lined out to left. The Knights were one out away from another extra frame when Ryan Cathers singled through the infield to bring in Marnati to win the second game for CBU.
Bryce Hutchings went 2-3 on the day, and had a run scored, while Broadstreet struck out nine to tie ART U's single-game program record in his second consecutive complete game loss.
