OPENING SERVE
The Knights hosted two of the conference's island schools last week, taking one set against Hawai'i Pacific but falling 3-1 on Wednesday, and then taking the loss against BYU-Hawai'i on Friday.
Rachael Smith had 51 assists in the loss to the Sea Warriors, while
Brittany Ulmer hit at a .364 rate against the Seasiders.
DIXIE DOWN BUT NOT OUT
The Dixie State Red Storm volleyball team was an even 8-8 last year, but are just off that pace this year, losing their last four matches. Their last win came against Dominican on Oct. 11, as Dixie State swept the Penguins in straight sets. The Red Storm are led in attacking by Shannon Young (149) and Mercedes O'Neal (145), while Jen Hardman (324 assists) and Shelby Sorenson (246 assists) have split the setting duties. The Knights rank ahead of the Red Storm in hitting percentage this year, and have also recorded more kills per set than Dixie State as well.
BICENTENNIAL WOMEN
Outside hitters
Taylor Suchy and
Angela Heath have teamed up to become two of the top attackers in the PacWest Conference in terms of kills, and are close to becoming one of only four pairs of teammates with more than 200 kills in the conference. Suchy is sitting at 198 kills on the year, at a rate of 2.39 per set, while Heath is right behind her at 196 kills, averaging 2.45 per set.
Lindsay Elgin is not far behind them at 174 kills, as the Knights are well within reach of getting three players to the 200 kill plateau.
'LOPES ON NATIONAL WATCH
Grand Canyon has put together their third 20-win season in the last four years this year, going 20-5 so far in 2012. But, with all five losses coming in PacWest play, they're all the way back at fifth in the conference standings. They're still a force to be reckoned with, and with the Knights coming to town, the Antelopes are looking to clarify the postseason picture for their squad. The 'Lopes are led by Kristen Preach (.344) and Shelby Taylor (.337), who rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in the conference for hitting percentage. Hayleigh Friemoth (192) and Janae Giles (170) are leading Grand Canyon in total kills, while Preach is a double threat as an attacking setter, also totaling 934 assists on the year.
SETTING IT UP
After these two road games, the Urban Knights will be returning home for two more home games to finish off the year against Notre Dame de Namur (Nov. 7) and Fresno Pacific (Nov. 10). The Knights swept the Argos in straight sets on the road last week, and will be facing the nationally-ranked Sunbirds for the second time after taking them to the brink on Oct. 13, when they went the full fives sets before falling to FPU.
