ST. GEORGE, UT -- Academy of Art flew into Utah to try and continue their solid offensive play and lock down the opponent's top weapon. Dixie State had other ideas, though, and even though their main offensive forces were kept under wraps for the majority of the match, a hat trick by Jennifer Mason, who had only scored one goal so far on the season, was all that the Red Storm needed to get past the Urban Knights for a 6-0 victory.
Dixie State took an early lead on a goal in the fourth minute by Mindi Beckstrom, the top shooter for the Red Storm (3-5, 1-1 PWC), on assists by Jennifer Mason and Jordyn Ross. The Urban Knights got two shots off in quick succession soon after, with
Louise Fillingham firing a shot in the eighth minute that was saved by goalkeeper Abby Johnson, and the ensuing corner kick giving
Haily MacDonald a chance that was stuffed by the Red Storm.
It remained 1-0 until the 32nd minute, when Mason, a freshman from Springfield, UT, started off her big day. Off a loose ball, Mason found an empty net and kicked it in for her second goal on the year. That put the Red Storm up 2-0, where it stayed until the intermission. At the end of the half, ART U (1-5, 0-3 PWC) had another offensive opportunity, as freshman defender
Andrea Guindi got off a shot, but it was turned away by Johnson.
The second half started off on a good note for the Urban Knights, as they had a chance in the 50th minute, but
Megan Bucci's shot missed high over the goal. Ten minutes later, Mason struck for the second time on an unassisted goal to put Dixie State up 3-0. Mason scored her third goal of the day in the 67th minute on a pass from Beckstrom, who started the day as the Red Storm's offensive leader in most categories but ended the day trailing Mason in goals and shots on goal.
Dixie State scored again in the 77th minute and the 87th, with Kimberly Thurmond assisting on a goal by Kelsey Gomer down the middle of the field and then again finding Lauren Minnick on the left side as time ticked down on the Urban Knights' day.
The Red Storm were able to contain Margaret Thorolfsdottir, whose offensive play has ramped up a lot in the past couple weeks, and
Hannah Emmett, who had three points in last week's match against Hawaii Pacific. The Knights were led by
Erica Wheeler-Dubin, who had two shots, and had five others get shots off against Dixie State.
The Knights will come back to California and take on the Warriors of William Jessup on Sept. 29. The game will be at Jessup Field in Rocklin, CA.
