Arcata, CA –
The Academy of Art University traveled north to face Humboldt State in a double-header on Wednesday morning. Things looked good at the start of the day for the Urban Knights. They came out attacking and jumped on the board early in both games. But the team's defense couldn't counter the strong Lumberjack offense. Despite early leads in the both games, ART U was edged out on the day; losing game one with a score of 6-7, and dropping game two 5-6.

The Urban Knights went straight to work in game one despite the early start time. Senior Alana Aweau led the game off with a home-run over the left-center fence. That put ART U on top right away. The women then scored two more runs in the top of the third. Freshman Lauren Stover tripled down the right field line to score Aweau and freshman Elyse Cordova.

But the three run lead didn't last long. In the bottom of the third the Lumberjacks answered back when they scored four runs of their own to take the lead for themselves. They then added one more run in the bottom of the fourth. ART U continued to fight back and scored once in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to re-take the lead in the game.

Errors proved costly for the Knights as pressure was applied in the bottom of the seventh by Humboldt. The 'Jacks pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and ended the game on a passed ball. ART U had several opportunities to score throughout the game, including bases loaded multiple times, but they failed to string their hits together and produce any more run support. At the end of the game, the Urban Knights fell 6-7.

Leading ART U offensively was Aweau who went 1-1 with a home-run, one run, and one RBI. She also recorded four walks in the game. Junior Genna Allen also did well going 1-2 with a home-run, one run, and one RBI, and junior Melissa Coe did well going 1-2 with one run scored, and a sacrifice hit.

Receiving the loss in the game was junior Sierrah Garcia. She went 6.1 innings pitched giving up 10 hits, seven runs (six earned), and had three strikeouts.

For the Lumberjacks, Serena Aragones did well going 2-2 with two doubles, and two runs scored. Kristen Nouzovsky also did well going 2-3 with a home-run, two runs, and three RBI, and Geneva Perrine went 2-3 with one run and one RBI. Receiving the win was Vaneza Hoover who went four innings pitched giving up four hits, four earned runs, and had three strikeouts.

The Urban Knights scored six runs on eight hits, had two errors, and left 11 runners on base.

Game two began very similar for the Urban Knights. The women came out strong and were attacking from the get go. The Knights pushed across five runs in the first inning sparked by a base clearing double by sophomore Andrea Hanchey. That double scored three runs. However, Humboldt quickly answered right back when they scored twice in the bottom of the first.

With solid pitching on the mound it looked like the Urban Knights would use their lead to hold them through the game. But the Lumberjacks chipped away and ended up tying the game in the bottom of the second, when again costly errors came in to play for ART U. Then in the bottom of the fourth, Humboldt hit a solo shot home run to take the lead. The Knights were unable to capitalize on any of their base runners, and ended up coming up short with a final score of 5-6.

On the mound for ART U was freshman Katie Brooks. She gave up 11 hits, six runs (five earned), and recorded three strikeouts in six innings of work. Brooks receives the loss in the game.

Leading the Knights offensively was sophomore Nicole Smith who went 2-3 with two doubles and one RBI. Hanchey also stood out going 2-4 with a double, one run, and three RBI, and freshman Elyse Cordova rounded things out for her team going 1-3 with one run scored.

For Humboldt, Kristen Nouzovsky again did well going 3-4 with one home-run, two runs, and three RBI, while Chrissy Stalf went 2-3 with two runs, and Ally Blenis went 2-3 with two runs batted in. Receiving the win was Jessica George who went all seven innings giving up four hits, one run, and had one strikeout.

The Knights scored five runs on five hits, had two errors and left five runners on base.

After the loss, the Academy of Art University's record falls to 19-11 overall, while Humboldt State's record improves to 18-16 overall. The Knights resume conference play this weekend when they travel to Dixie State on April 9th and 10th. Game times are scheduled for 12:00 and 2:00pm on both days in St. George, UT.
