Game Notes

ART U HEADS OUT ON YEAR'S LAST ROADTRIP

With the season's work now complete on the mainland, Academy of Art University baseball has one final task: Hawaii. Beginning this Friday, the Urban Knights will play nine games in six days on the islands with series rematches against Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii-Hilo. With several close games taking place when the teams met earlier this year in the Bay Area, the conclusion to ART U's 2011 campaign figures to be an exciting one.

FIRST PITCH
Academy of Art opens up its final roadtrip of the season with a five-game stint against Hawaii Pacific on Friday, Apr. 29. That day will feature a single, nine-inning contest beginning at 6:00 PM HST (9:00 PM PST). Day two, Saturday, Apr. 30, has the teams set for a doubleheader at 2:00 PM HST (5:00 PM PST). Then, on Sunday, May 1, it will be a doubleheader at 12:00 PM HST (3:00 PM PST) with the second contest being non-conference. All games between ART U and HPU are scheduled to be held at Hans L'Orange Ballpark in Waipahu, HI.

Following a travel day, the Knights will play the first of two doubleheaders against Hawaii-Hilo on Tuesday, May 3 at 4:00 PM HST (7:00 PM PST). The final two games of the 2011 season then come on Wednesday, May 4 at 12:00 PM HST (3:00 PM PST). All contests between ART U and UHH are scheduled to be held at Wong Stadium in Hilo, HI.

Though Live Stats will not be available for either series, live score/stat updates for all games will appear on the Academy of Art University Athletics Twitter.

KNIGHT WATCH
Juniors Zach Mexicano, Kenny Rollins, Jr., and Niko Leite have all made major contributions in the month of April and they were rewarded with PacWest Weekly honors this past Monday. Mexicano, whose three wins currently lead the team, threw a seven-inning gem against Grand Canyon on Apr. 15 for his PacWest-leading fifth complete game. He still leads ART U in innings pitched (67.0) and strikeouts (36) as well. Rollins, Jr. sports the highest batting average on the team among regular starters (.314) and was propelled by a four-hit game against GCU on Apr. 16. Finally, Leite had a productive 6-for-10 series against the Antelopes and has upped his speed game with six of his nine steals coming in April. Overall, junior Zach Babitt remains the team leader in runs batted in (24) and runs scored (28).

SCOUTING THE SEA WARRIORS
For the last two weeks, Hawaii Pacific has faced one team, Hawaii-Hilo, 12 times. Since the Sea Warriors roadtrip to the mainland where they faced ART U for five games in the Bay Area, HPU has stayed on the islands to take three of four from Dixie State and split the 12-game series with UHH. Of those 12 meetings, all six of Hawaii Pacific's victories were by three runs or less with one going into extra innings. Solid on offense and defense, HPU's top run-producer is infielder Kale Sumner who leads the team with 35 RBIs and 15 extra-base hits. The Sea Warriors' leading starter is righty Michael Greene (4-4) who has a 3.57 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 63.0 innings pitched.

SCOUTING THE VULCANS

After enduring a 12-game losing streak early in PacWest play, Hawaii-Hilo has now worked its way to a total of 12 conference wins. In Hawaii-Hilo's recent extended 12-game stretch against Hawaii Pacific, the Vulcans won six, including three of the first four which came at UHH's Wong Stadium. The Vulcans carry the PacWest's top hitter in outfielder Keoni Manago who currently sports a .400 batting average (60-for-150) to go with three home runs, 34 runs scored, and 22 RBIs. In addition to the conference's best hitter, Hawaii-Hilo also has arguably the best pitcher. Lefty Kekoa Lee (2-2) leads the PacWest with a 2.76 ERA over seven starts to go with 42 strikeouts in 42.1 innings pitched. If the Urban Knights win three of four against HPU and then sweep the Vulcans on this trip, Academy of Art will surpass Hawaii-Hilo to take fourth place in the PacWest standings.

KNIGHTS BATTLE #16 UCSD IN TWO GAMES
Up against UC San Diego, the #16 team in the country, this past weekend, Academy of Art took a pair of tough losses. The first contest, on Apr. 22, had ART U hanging right with Tritons for the first few innings. Freshman right-handed starting pitcher Wade Broadstreet (0-7) blanked UCSD in two of his four innings on the mound though a five-run fourth created separation for the home team. The Urban Knights did score in the fifth, however, thanks to a single and a steal by senior Darnell Quinney, then junior Spencer Roland followed that up with a RBI single. UC San Diego would go on to take game one, 15-1. In game two on Apr. 23, Academy of Art pushed an early 1-0 advantage by way of Babitt's RBI bunt to score Worley from third in the first inning. The Tritons would battle back and score five in the second to eventually win 12-2.
