HOME SERIES PITS KNIGHTS AGAINST RED STORM
After inclement weather prevented the Urban Knights' series with Fresno Pacific last week, baseball now starts Pacific West Conference play this Friday. Academy of Art faces Dixie State in a four-game stretch at ART U's home field of Laney College.
FIRST PITCH
The Knights and Red Storm start off their series with a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 25. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:00 PM. A second doubleheader follows on Saturday, Feb. 26 beginning at 10:00 AM. All contests are scheduled to be held at Laney College in Oakland, CA. Live Stats will be available for all games in this series.
KNIGHT WATCH
As one of the Top 10 hitters in the Pacific West Conference, senior Darnell Quinney earned a PacWest Weekly Honor Roll selection this past week. Quinney, who leads ART U with a .429 average, was consistently strong at the plate against Cal State Stanislaus and has four runs batted in along with three runs scored. Sophomore infielder Stefen Henderson has been delivering as well. Three of his seven hits have gone for extra bases and he paces the Knights with five RBIs. As a team, ART U ranks second in the PacWest in total steals with 13 thus far.
SCOUTING THE RED STORM
Currently ranked #9 in the West Region Poll, Dixie State won two of three games to begin the season, but has encountered tough pitching since then. The Red Storm defeated Azusa Pacific in their home opener and took two of three from Cal State San Bernardino. However, a rain-shortened series with Mesa State had DSC drop a 9-5 decision as well as a 4-0 result in a doubleheader. Outfielder Sam Friend has been a major offensive spark for Dixie thus far. He currently sports a .333 batting average and has one of the team's three home runs. With three starts under his belt, right-handed pitcher Mike Dedrick (0-1) leads the way with a 2.60 ERA and 14 strikeouts over 17.1 innings pitched.
KNIGHTS SCORE 16 RUNS IN WEEKEND SERIES WITH STANISLAUS
In ART U's second series of the season, the Urban Knights' offense came through despite four losses to Cal State Stanislaus. Six Academy of Art players registered at least one hit in the opener on Feb. 11 which featured four separate ART U rallies. Though CSUS won the game 18-8, Head Coach Brian Guinn was pleased with the offensive production.
“We're going to score some runs,” Coach Guinn said. “We have a very fast team and they're learning. Their approach to hitting is just so much better. I'm happy with the offensive output; we just have to step it up defensively.”
Academy of Art fell 18-4 and 7-0 in the doubleheader that followed on Saturday, Feb. 12, but Quinney showed his versatility that day by going 2-for-4 in game one and pitching a complete game two. On the third and final day in the series, Stanislaus prevailed 8-4 though a three-run double by Quinney made it a close battle midway through.
LOOKING AHEAD
Early March will feature another matchup of the Knights and Red Storm. This time, the teams play in St. George, UT beginning with a doubleheader on Mar. 4.
