TIPPING OFF
The Urban Knights were painfully close to their first win of the season on Friday, with the game-winner by William Overton, Jr. rattling out as time expired against Fort Lewis. The Knights also faced their stiffest competition of the year on Saturday as they were stifled by No. 22 Seattle Pacific. They return from Phoenix with a vengeance to take on Fresno State and Menlo.
PICK YOUR POISON
The Urban Knights are getting scoring from all over the floor right now, and have had three different players lead the team in scoring. Overton paced the Knights in the first three games, Ameer Shamsud-din set the season mark at 32 points against UC San Diego, and Czar Robotham led ART U in both games of the GCU Thanksgiving Holiday Classic.
CAGING THE BULLDOGS
Division I Fresno State has a losing record right now, and has lost two of their last three games by a total of six points after staging furious second-half comebacks. The Bulldogs have been led by their stellar scoring backcourt of Kevin Olekaibe (21.3 ppg) and Jonathan Wills (11.3 ppg). Wills had a great week last week, averaging 14.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game at the NIT Season Tip Off.
WILL'S WEEK TO REMEMBER
Will Overton has been looking forward to facing Menlo College again after he set a modern-day PacWest record with 44 points against the Oaks on December 4, 2010. Overton has yet to top that mark, but it jumpstarted a monster week, as he put up totals of 32 points against CSU Monterey Bay (Dec. 8, 2010), and 29 points at Western Washington (Dec. 12, 2010). He also scored 26 points twice, against CSU East Bay (Nov. 16, 2011) and Hawaii Pacific (Jan. 27, 2011).
CHOPPING DOWN THE OAKS
Menlo has mirrored Fresno State, with multiple comebacks in the last week. The difference is that the Oaks split their games, defeating Johnson & Wales 73-70 at the Lamont Ramsey Classic last week. Their second comeback against Westmont fell short, as they lost 71-67. The Oaks are led by Tim Tatum (14.8 ppg) and ChaRunn Jones (14.0 ppg). Tatum is making more than half of his shot (54.4%) and is also pulling down 6.9 rebounds per contest.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Knights will have a week off before making their first trip north of the border to take on Simon Fraser in Burnaby, British Columbia (Canada) on Dec. 10, and then will open their PacWest slate a week later at Cal Baptist on Dec. 17.
