Laie, HI -- The Urban Knights were unable to glean any treats from their Halloween matchup wih first-place BYU-Hawaii, getting swept in three sets 25-16, 25-20, 25-18. The Seasiders (14-3, 11-1 PWC) outhit the Knights .254 to just .042 to move within one win of clinching the conference championship.
Academy of Art was led by
Leinani Keanini, who continued who strong play in her home state with 12 kills and 16 digs.
Ka'ena Kaina added 9 kills,
Midori Le had 14 digs, and
Melissa Cheng had 27 assists in the loss for the Urban Knights, who fell to 7-15, 3-8 in the PacWest.
ART U was unable to come up with an answer for Stella Chen, who had 14 kills, hit .314, came up with 12 digs, and put up two blocks for the Seasiders. Aika Becker had 12 kills and three total blocks, and the Seasiders outblocked the Knights 10.0 to 2.0.
The best chance for the Knights came in the second set, when they were up 10-5 after a block by Kaina and
Camille Board, but BYU-Hawaii came back and tied the game at 13-13 before pulling ahead on a 5-0 run. The Knights stayed close, and a Keanini kill made it 20-19, but the Seasiders used another 5-1 run to win the set.
The third set again showed the tenacity of Academy of Art's never-say-die attitude, as they played from behind for a majority of the set, taking back a couple points at a time to get to 15-10. The Knights staved off three match points before a Seasiders block put them down for good in the third set.
Academy of Art will be right back at it on Tuesday night against Chaminade, tipping off at 10PM Pacific Time at McCabe Gymnasium in Honolulu, HI.
