ACADEMY LOOKS TO CLOSE OUT SEASON STRONG

Heading into the final four matches of 2011, Urban Knights men's soccer has an opportunity to wrap up the year on a winning note. Academy of Art will host two Hawaii schools, go on the road for a non-conference matchup, and face a Dominican team against whom ART U achieved its scoring record earlier this year. The Knights are in action first against BYU-Hawaii this Wednesday and then Friday at Pacific Union College.

OPENING KICKOFF
This week features one home match and the final road contest of the year for ART U. PacWest Conference play continues Wednesday, Oct. 26 with a pairing against BYU-Hawaii at Boxer Stadium set to begin at 1:30 PM following the women's match. Then, on Friday, Oct. 28, Academy of Art travels to Angwin, CA for its contest against Pacific Union at 3:00 PM. Remember to check @UrbanKnightNews on Twitter for score updates and recaps. KNIGHT WATCH
With the sixth most assists in the PacWest and the second most goals on ART U, sophomore midfielder Patrick Heinemann has done it all this year. He has 10 points thus far which puts him fifth in terms of the single season points record for Academy of Art. The ever dangerous tandem of junior forward Grimur Grimsson and freshman forward Frederik Nagel still share the team lead for total goals with four apiece. Junior goalkeeper Ian Sutherland added 10 more saves this past week and has one shutout this season through nine starts. Sutherland ranks fourth in the PacWest in saves per game (4.22), eighth in saves (38), eighth in goals against average (2.59), and ninth in save percentage (.623).

STRANDING THE SEASIDERS
Just one point ahead of ART U in the PacWest standings, BYU-Hawaii began the season with five consecutive victories, but they have endured a tough stretch recently. The Seasiders defeated Hawaii-Hilo and Chaminade twice in September before taking their first loss (5-0 at Hawaii Pacific on Oct. 1). BYU-Hawaii also sustained a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Simon Fraser, #1 in NCAA Division II and 14-0 this year, but came back with victories over UHH and CUH once again. Most recently, the Seasiders began their mainland roadtrip with a 2-0 loss to Notre Dame de Namur on Monday. The one time BYU-Hawaii and Academy of Art played last year, the Knights won 1-0 to spark their four-match win streak in Hawaii. The Seasiders' main offensive weapon this season has been Bent Jenson who has four goals while Eric Lowe and Kamuela Kamoe each have a team-high three assists. Between the pipes, goalkeeper Josiah Holtz has started all 14 matches for BYU-Hawaii, posting 78 saves and allowing 22 goals in the process. He ranks second in the PacWest in saves and fifth in save percentage (.780).

PULVERIZING THE PIONEERS
After a difficult season opener against Bethesda Christian on Sept. 16, Pacific Union took four California Pacific Conference losses before earning its first victory, a 2-1 decision over Southwestern College. The Pioneers are still looking for their first CalPac victory of the year and will play Menlo College of Oct. 25 prior to facing the Knights. Though over a year has passed since Academy of Art and Pacific Union last met, it was certainly a memorable occasion back on Sept. 1, 2009. The Knights won 3-1, powered by three goals from Mario Pineda who recorded the first hat trick in program history. The current scoring leaders for PUC are Matthew Kimble and Wagih Goda who each have two goals on the season. With nine games played, goalkeeper Josh Koot has collected 60 saves while allowing 37 goals. He ranks fifth in the CalPac in saves.

THE CONFERENCE CHALLENGE
Head Coach Daniel Rosaia and the Academy of Art University men's soccer team play numerous elite teams in the PacWest Conference this season. Last year, the conference had three teams finish with 10 or more conference victories including 2010 PacWest Champion Grand Canyon who was ranked #3 when the Knights faced them in the latter part of the season. As of the eighth NSCAA West Region poll, five different PacWest teams have been recognized at some point this year. GCU and Cal Baptist are currently among the top 10 with the Antelopes at #5 and the Lancers taking #10.

THE WEEK THAT WAS
Coming off a 6-4 victory over Dominican where ART U set a new program scoring record, the Knights ran into a tough Grand Canyon team ranked #4 in the West Region at the time. Academy of Art played two matches this past week at the Antelopes' soccer field in Arizona, the first of which saw GCU win 6-1 on Oct. 20. Though the 'Lopes scored two early goals, ART U responded with one of its own from Heinemann. The German midfielder used a pass from junior midfielder Brazer Bozlak to net the ball from 20 yards in the 12th minute. Down by just two goals at the half, the Knights pressed hard early in the second half, but Grand Canyon held on for the win. Then, two days later on Oct. 22, the teams met once again with Academy of Art's defense hanging tough. Improvements were made on the Knights' side despite GCU winning the match 3-0 to continue its ascent towards the top of the PacWest standings.

LOOKING AHEAD
There will be just two more matches in the 2011 campaign for Academy of Art men's soccer at the end of this week. The Knights face Dominican (Nov. 4) and Hawaii-Hilo (Nov. 6) both at Boxer Stadium to wrap up the season in November.
