KNIGHTS AND PENGUINS MEET FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2011

With two thrilling matches against Notre Dame de Namur now in the books, ART U men's soccer shifts its attention to Dominican this week as Pacific West Conference play hits the halfway mark. A true team effort propelled Academy of Art University to its 2-1 overtime comeback victory last Thursday and the Urban Knights will look to keep rolling on the road.

OPENING KICKOFF
In the Knights' lone match this week, ART U travels across the bay to Dominican's Forest Meadows Soccer Field for a 3:30 PM match on the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 15. The match will follow the women's contest which is scheduled for 1:00 PM. Remember to check @UrbanKnightNews on Twitter for score updates and recaps. KNIGHT WATCH
Goals from junior forward Grimur Grimsson and freshman forward Frederik Nagel this past week kept them among the scoring leaders not only on Academy of Art, but also the PacWest as well. The tandem is tied for fifth in goals scored with four apiece. With his second assist of the season last week, sophomore midfielder Patrick Heinemann is currently tied with junior midfielder Brazer Bozlak for the team lead in that category. Now with six starts under his belt, junior goalkeeper Ian Sutherland has 19 saves, 10 goals allowed, and one shutout in over 530 minutes. He ranks seventh in the PacWest in goals against average (1.70), and eighth in both save percentage (.655) and saves per game (3.17).

PUSHING PAST THE PENGUINS
Up against several strong Division II West Region teams to start 2011, Dominican University began PacWest play with a 2-1 loss to Hawaii Pacific on Sept. 18. The Penguins then went into double overtime against Cal State San Bernardino, but ultimately fell 2-1 again. After two defeats at Cal Baptist, DUC achieved its first victory of the season, a 1-0 win over Chaminade on Sept. 29. Most recently, Dominican sustained another tough one-goal loss in double overtime at Dixie State and a 3-0 defeat at Grand Canyon. The Knights and Penguins split last year with ART U taking a 3-2 victory in overtime late in the season. David Mendez leads DUC with three goals and one assist thus far while Casey Gibson has handled the majority of the goalkeeping duties with 27 saves and 18 goals allowed in eight starts.

THE CONFERENCE CHALLENGE
Head Coach Daniel Rosaia and the Academy of Art University men's soccer team play numerous elite teams in the PacWest Conference this season. Last season, the conference had three teams finish 10 or more conference victories including 2010 PacWest Champion Grand Canyon who was ranked #3 when the Knights faced them in the latter part of the year. As of the sixth NSCAA West Region poll, five different PacWest teams have been recognized at some point this year. GCU and Dixie State are currently among the top 10 with the Antelopes at #4 and the Red Storm holding on to #10.

THE WEEK THAT WAS
It was an intriguing storyline with Academy of Art facing rival Notre Dame de Namur twice in three days last week. On Oct. 6 at NDNU's Koret Field, 76 minutes of scoreless soccer was eventually broken up by an Argonauts goal which it appeared would be the difference. However, an incredible ART U comeback was then sparked by a goal from Grimsson to tie the match with 50 seconds left. Senior defender Vilmundur Sveinsson set up the play which would soon send the match into overtime. A dangerous squad in the extra period, Academy of Art went for the game-winner twice and on the second attempt, a shot by Nagel from Heinemann, a celebration was in order. ART U won the match 2-1, earning its second consecutive PacWest victory. Two days later, Notre Dame tried to even the series at one match apiece and the Argos were successful with a 1-0 victory. After another lengthy scoreless period to start, NDNU worked a series of passes which resulted in the only goal of the afternoon.

LOOKING AHEAD
ART U's final out-of-state roadtrip takes them to Arizona for two contests against Grand Canyon in three days. The teams begin with a night match on Oct. 20 and then finish in the afternoon on Oct. 22.
