Urban Knights Slay the Clan

In their final game of the Cal State LA/Cal Poly Pomona Tournament the Urban Knights made easy work of the Clan from Simon Fraser University. The Academy of Art women's volleyball team took the match in three sets (25-14,25-14,25-14) improving their record to 2-2.

ART U was virtually perfect on the court tonight. The Urban Knights out did the Clan in every category, knocking down 37 kills and committing just six errors, while Simon Fraser committed 18 hitting errors. ART U as a whole combined for an impressive .470 hitting percentage.

The Urban Knights made easy work of the Clan, holding Simon Fraser to under 15 points in all three sets. Dan Yang once again topped all Knights finishing with 10 kills, and three block assists.

During the first set ART U kept SFU to a -.107 hitting percentage. "They were a big team. But, we were bigger. We had an outstanding night at the net, and overall we had really great defense all weekend," said Head Coach Marcus Young. The Urban Knights jumped out of the gate with one goal in mind, to win. ART U took the first seven out of eight points, then later in the set they scored seven unanswered points catapulting their lead over the Clan to 12, 23-11. The large cushion made it easy for the Urban Knights to take set one 25-14.

Set three saw Simon Fraser making an adjustment to the powerful play of the Urban Knights as they were able to keep the score within a few points. It wasn't until the two teams were tied 11-11 did the Urban Knights make their move, they scored 11 straight points, 22-11, which brought them three points shy of a sweep. Then just six plays later the Urban Knights completed their task beating the Clan 25-14.

had an amazing game, she had a match high 31 assists along with four service aces. Ashley Irvine also had a a solid game, the freshman also served up four aces. Jill Singletary, Camille Board, and Caitlin Boring each knocked down five kills a piece, with Singletary completing another error-less match, going 5-6 from the floor. As a team the Knights combined for 14 blocks.

"I am Pleased with everyone's game tonight. I was really pleased with how the team responded when Amy left the game due to a sprained ankle. Everyone stepped up and our energy and focus didn't drop," Young says.

The Urban Knights will use this week to prepare for the Peggy Martin Classic in Warrensburg, MO in which they will face #4 University of Indianapolis.
