San Marcos, CA -- The Academy of Art University men's golf team traveled to San Marcos California to compete in the CSU San Marcos Invitational. At the end of day one the Urban Knights sat in 9th out of 12 teams after the first two rounds of the CSU San Marcos Invitational. The 12-team field competed at on the par-72, 6,750-yard San Luis Rey Downs Golf Course in Bonsall.
This tournament marks the Knights first of the spring season, AAU Coach Michele Larkey said “This was our first tournament, of course we hoped to do better score wise, but we learned a tremendous amount and we will continue to go forward in building a successful program.”
Individually,
Stuart Favretto came out of the gate fast for the Urban Knights, shooting a good first round score of 74. After round one; he was just four strokes behind pack leader Ryan Ellerbrock of Point Loma Nazarene who finished the round at two under par (70).
However, it was
Erik Majzner who led the Urban Knights overall at the end of day one with a two round score of 155 (78 - 77). He finished tied for 31st heading into the final round.
Next on the team was
Matt Garcia who shot a 158 (81 - 77). His total of 158 put him in a tie for 43rd along with fellow teammate
Dave Carney who shot the exact same score.
Cal Baptist's Carl Stjarnfalt shot three under par (141) to lead all individuals at the end of the first day.
AAU entered day two of the CSU San Marcos Invitational in 9th place. Despite strong play from
Matt Garcia and
Stuart Favretto the Urban Knights return to San Francisco with a 10th place finish.
Matt Garcia finished tied for 27th place after placing 43rd following the first two rounds of play.
Garcia shot one over par on the final round, and added a birdie to his stellar play.
Favretto and
Majzner both finished tied for 39th place. The two Knights averaged a 78.3 over three rounds and finished with a total score of 235.
Dave Carney posted a 46th place finish, he shot 81- 77- 81 for a 239 total score over three rounds.
Holy Names University took the whole the tournament, the Hawks led after every round and finished with a three-round team total of 868. Cal Baptist took second with an 883, and CSU San Bernardino placed third with an 892.
Individually, Cal Baptist's Carl Stjarnfalt won the event with a total score of 4 under par (212).
The Urban Knights travel next to Bakersfield, CA to take part in the CSU Bakersfield Invitational Feb 22 - 23.
