Las Vegas, NV- The Academy of Art University softball team competed in day two of the Desert Stinger tournament on Saturday evening.
The Urban Knights faced Colorado School of Mines in the first game and ended up losing with a score of 5-3. In the second game, the Knights battled against top ranked Augustana College (SD), and dropped that game as well with a final score of 8-2.
The Knights scored first in the bottom of the first inning in their game against the Orediggers. Although they took an early lead and were able to hold the Orediggers scoreless in the first few innings, the Urban Knights were unable to keep the Mines scoreless for long. In the third inning the Orediggers scored three runs, after starting the inning off with a home run. The Knights were able to score one run in the bottom of the third, to come within one, and then tied things up in the bottom of the fourth.
The Orediggers reacted quickly, and tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth to take a two run lead. The Urban Knights were not able to produce any more runs of their own despite having bases loaded in the sixth. Errors proved costly in the game and the Knights ended up losing with a final score of 5-3.
Freshman Andrea Hanchey stepped up offensively for AAU in the game. She went 2-3 with a run scored. Sophomore Melissa Coe went 2-4 with one run scored, and sophomore Jayme Stewart also went 2-4 with a double in the game.
Freshman Kimberly Dauer started the game in the circle for the Knights and ended up recording the loss. Dauer went four innings pitched giving up four earned runs, one walk, and posted four strikeouts. Her record now stands at 1-1.
For the Orediggers, Kaleigh Starr and Molly Thiebault both went 1-3 with one run scored. Macy Jones stood out going 2-3 with a home run. Liz Kramer was the winning pitcher in the game. She went 3.1 innings pitched giving up six hits, three earned runs and one walk.
In the second game of the evening, the Urban Knights came out flat and it showed. Augustana scored in the top of the first by pushing two runs across. They then tacked on three more runs combined in the next two innings. The Knights finally got on the board in the bottom of the third when they scored two runs of their own, cutting Augustana's lead to within one.
Those two runs would be all that the Urban Knights would be able to muster in the game. Augustana scored one more run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to secure their lead. AAU ended up losing with a score of 8-2. The Knights were outhit by Augustana 11-4, and each team recorded three errors. The Knights also left a total of 15 runners on base in the two games combined (eight in game two alone).
Ashley Lokey had a solid game for the Academy of Art University. She went 2-3 with one run scored. Jayme Stewart went 1-3 with one run scored and Kimberly Dauer also went 1-3 in the game.
On the mound for the Urban Knights was sophomore Sierrah Garcia. Garcia went 6.2 innings pitched giving up 11 hits, eight runs (only five earned runs), two walks, and posted nine strikeouts. Her record is now 1-2.
Augustana's leading hitter was Henke who went 3-4 with two runs scored and one run batted in. Brown went 2-4 with one run batted in and Kalkman also went 2-4 with two runs scored. Stewart received the win for her team as she went four innings pitched giving up two hits, no runs, and had three strikeouts.
After the two loses the Academy of Art University's record falls to 2-3-1 overall, while Colorado School of Mines' is now 1-0 and Augustana's record is now 5-0. The Urban Knights play in their final game of the Desert Stinger tournament on Sunday, February 14th. They are set to take on the University of Mary, with the first pitch starting at 2:00 PM at Majestic Fields Park.
