ART U Returns to Mainland With a Win

Honolulu, HI--- The Urban Knights played their final game of the 2010 season on the Island of Hawaii tonight at McCabe Gym. ART U faced Chaminade University (4-10) on their home court tonight and defeated the Silverswords in five sets (25-21, 23-25, 23-25, 30-28, 16-14). The Academy of Art women's volleyball team, who competed in a record number of plays last night, came out with one thing on their mind; winning.

They opened the first set with two powerful kills by Camille Board and Dan Yang. The early scores set the tone for the remainder of the match for the Urban Knights. The momentum continued to flow for the ART U as they opened up a 5-2 lead over the Silverswords early in game one. Chaminade was able to tie the score at 12-12 midway through the set, but sheer determination gave ART U the 25-21 win and a 1-0 lead.

The last time these two teams met in San Francisco the Urban Knights made easy work of the Silverswords, cruising to a 3-0 victory. This time around, however, the Silverswords showed a feisty side and kept the match interesting all the way until the final point.

Down one nothing, the Silverswords rallied against ART U and claimed victories in the second and third sets by a score of 23-25. Then in the fourth set, just as it looked as if the Urban Knights would suffer their first loss to the Silverswords, ART U turned up the intensity and pulled out a must have win in set four to push the match to a fifth and final set. The Urban Knights rallied from being down 8-15 midway through the set to tie the score at 24-24. It took four ties and five lead changes to secure the Urban Knights' 30-28 win over the Silverswords in the fourth.

The plot could not have been thicker during the final set, as neither team would relinquish the lead by more than a point. The score was 14-13 in favor of ART U when Chaminade called a timeout to regroup. After the time out call, Chaminade scored a point to tie the sore at 14 a piece. Un-willing to accept defeat the Urban Knights persevered and claimed the 16-14 win, taking the game, 3-2.

The Silverswords were a tough match for ART U tonight and almost handed the Urban Knights their fourth loss in row. Poerava Gantt was unstoppable for the Silverwords, finishing with a match high 21 kills, combining for six blocks, and adding 11 digs. Crystal Powell finished the match with 18 kills, while Pisila Tukia finished with an impressive 12 total blocks alone. Tanya Avino dished out 52 assists.

For the Urban Knights, Dan Yan lead the way with 20 kills, 14 digs and two blocks. Camille Board knocked down 15 kills, registered eight digs and had two blocks in the match. Amy Bush added 12 kills and four blocks. Melissa Cheng managed seven kills while dishing out a match high 56 assists. Leinani Keanini had another match high performance, finishing with 28 digs.

The win moves ART U to 14-11 overall and 8-6 in conference. While Chaminade drops to 4-10 in PacWest play and 7-14 overall.

The Urban Knights return to the floor on the Mainland on Thursday Nov. 11 in a Dominican University rematch. Urban Knight Seniors; Dan Yang, and Jelena Jakovljevic will be honored at Kezar Pavilion. Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
