Palo Alto, Calif. -- Sophomore Amos Maru led the charge with a 16th place individual finish for the Urban Knights men's cross country team at the 36th annual Stanford Invitational. The Academy of Art University came in 16th place overall as a team while the women's top finisher, sophomore Denisse Correa crossed in a tie for 149th place. Held at the Stanford University Golf Course, the meet included schools such as UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and Chico State in addition to Stanford.

Maru completed the 8k course in a time of 24:44 which serves as his new personal best. Following Maru, sophomore Daveson Marindich finished in a three-way tie with Loyola Marymount's Connor Pastoor and UC Irvine's Andy Burich for 68th place (25:55). In the third slot for AAU, junior Geoffrey Cheruiyot took 98th place with his 26:35 time and behind him, sophomores Mark Bretan and Shawn Daut finished in 112th place (27:53) and 116nd place (29:09) respectively.

As a team, the Knights' 410 points and total time of 134:16 was less than four seconds from Humboldt State in 15th place and just over four seconds from 14th place Sacramento State. Academy of Art University completed the course in an average time of 26:52.

Host Stanford University was the convincing victor in the meet. The top five of Stanford's finishers took the first five slots, including Chris Derrick who won the race, and the Cardinal ran away with a first place team victory.

For the women, the Urban Knights were led by Correa's time of 24:23 which earned her a tie with UNLV's Bailey Kuestermeyer for 149th place. After Correa, junior Irinel Zamfir completed the 6k race in a time of 25:47 and wound up tying Erin Burke of Saint Mary's College of California for 172nd place overall. Freshman Stacey Toth took 177th (27:56) and junior Monica Anguiano crossed the line in 179th place (30:44). Unfortunately, only four Knights finished which did not qualify them for a team score.

Both the men's and women's squads will run again on Oct. 3 when Academy of Art University travels to Stillwater, Oklahoma for the Cowboy Jamboree hosted by Oklahoma State.
