San Rafael, Calif. -- Urban Knights men's soccer dropped a 1-0 decision to Dominican University on Monday at Forest Meadows Field in San Rafael, CA. A nail-biter the whole way, the Penguins managed a heart-breaking goal off a blocked kick in the 86th minute to defeat the Urban Knights. AAU is now 3-4-1 overall and 0-2 in Pacific West Conference play while Dominican is 4-3 overall and 1-0 in PacWest play.
The teams combined for just three shots in the first 25 minutes of the match, but the action would pick up as halftime approached. Three consecutive shots by the Knights came in between the 36th and 39th minutes, but the Penguins' defense kept the teams scoreless heading into the half.
An intense second period came next as the teams combined for nine fouls in the second 45 minutes. Early in the half, junior midfielder Manuel Padilla had two shots, one on goal, but neither found the back of the net. Freshman forward Daniel Higa then had two missed shots of his own before Dominican managed to score in the 86th minute. Penguins forward Shane Huiberts took a blocked kick and netted the only goal of the match to give DUC the win.
Padilla and junior forward Frankie Diaz combined for four shots off the bench and Higa led the team with three shots. Senior midfielder Jaime Patino-Calvo and sophomore midfielder Richard Martin each had one of the three shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Waller played all 90 minutes and registered two saves with one goal allowed.
On Dominican's side, Huiberts brought most of the offense with five shots on the day and one goal. Forward Evan Cordova assisted the Penguins' only score and goalie Matthew Carlson played the entire match and had two saves of his own.
The Urban Knights will play a rematch against Notre Dame de Namur this Thursday, Sept. 21 when the Argonauts travel to San Francisco for a meeting at Boxer Stadium. The teams battled into overtime this past Saturday and NDNU had the upper hand in a 3-2 victory.
